Point reallocation-can they do this?

We points at HHI every Thanksgiving, and they don't impose holiday point "rates". Yet, HHI is at capacity every Thanksgiving. What I got wondering is-could TBTB at DVC decide to dramatically alter the points for that time, so that instead of that being a super-low point time, it would become real high, maybe even the equivalent of summertime points? If I understand right, they could do that as long as they made an equal decrease in points some other time, that the only requirement is that points must remain the same TOTAL for the YEAR. That is, if points for Thanksgiving went up 70 points for the week, as long as DVC shaved 70 points from someplace else during the year, it would be OK. Do I understand it right? And more importantly, is my question understandable?

My understanding is that yes, TBTB could reallocate points at HHI such that Thanksgiving week costs more and other times cost less. The net change must equal zero.

Hope my answer is understandable, LOL. :teeth:

P.S. FWIW, I do not think that they will reallocate Thanksgiving week at HHI.

Yes, as long as the points for the entire resort for the year are the same, they can rearrange them any way they want.

Yes, they could reallocate so that there is better balance.

As an example, if they raised the Thanksgiving week points requirement by 30 points for a 2 Bdrm unit, and reduced the 1st 2 weeks of November by 15 points each, they would have the same total point costs. This might result in Thanksgiving week still remaining full, and having better occupancy for the first two weeks of November, which would be an overall greater occupancy for the resort.

I don't know how much fine tuning DVC really games and implements from year to year. To some extent, since HH is "sold out" on points, it would be better if they had less than 100% occupancy, as it would reduce operating costs, while keeping income steady. People are just not using some small amount of points for HH and not banking them, renting them, or transferring them into RCI or some other exchange.

Thanks everyone. I thought they could, in theory. However, CarolMN, let's hope that your PS is the reality. We bought enough points to comfortably be able to go to HHI every year, but if they raise the rates, we could be in deep doodoo at 11 months.

Not only can they do it, if I am correct, they are supposed to do it.

That's probably an accurate statement.

But the comment I would make to OP is just because the resort is at capacity doesn't necessarily mean that things are out of balance. Technically all resorts should be close to full occupancy year-round. Just because the resort is full around Thanksgiving doesn't mean those dates are under-priced.

Undoubtedly the most unbalanced period right now is early December at all WDW resorts. Until DVC does something about that, all other imbalances pale in comparison, IMO.
