Not sure about this and need the help of all you experts out there.

DW & I are planned to stay in a 1 BR with a lockoff (couldn't get a dedicated 2BR. Our DS & DIL are expected to join us (they will use the lockout room) but we're unsure if they can make it due to uncertain work schedules and college course committments. Both are studying for their masters at NYU.
The target dates are December 7 thru 11 at SSR.

If we need to reduce to the 1BR and drop the lockout room, do we lose the points? Are there any date requirements as to when we need to change the res?
Any suggestions will be well received and appreciated.

Thanks

Did you reserve a one bedroom and a studio or did you reserve a two bedroom lockoff? If you reserved the two bedroom, you can't just drop the studio portion. You have to cancel and rebook. And this late, you are probably not going to get a one bedroom. So you are probably stuck with the two bedroom.

If you booked the studio and one bedroom separately, you can drop the studio. If you drop it less than 31 days before the start of the reservation, your points go into holding and you can only use them to make a reservation 60 days out or less. Plus they expire at the end of the use year. If you drop the reservation 31 days or more from the start of the reservation, those points just go back into your account and expire at the end of your UY unless you can still bank them. Remember, too, that if you booked them separately, there is no guarantee that they will connect to be a lockoff two bedroom.

i don't think you can simply cancel the studio if you have booked a 2BR. you would typically have to cancel the 2BR and try to rebook a 1BR if available.

i would plan to enjoy a 2BR regardless and chalk it up to the risks of travelling with family.

in general, if you cancel more than 31 days out, you will get the pts back in this UY (whether you can bank them or not depends on whether they are current year pts and when your banking window closes.)

if you cancel within 31 days, the points are reclassified as "holding pts" and become more difficult to use (you can only book within 60 days out).

the big problem though, would be trying to rebook an early december stay at the last minute.

We booked a 2 bedroom so I guess we'll just have to suffer with al that extra room if they can't make it.
Maybe I can take other kids or grandchildren:yay:
I don't htink the parents will let me take them out of school though.

Thanks so much for your input it ivery appreciated.

Since the time frame you are refering to is the most popular one for DVC reservations, I wouldn't count on being able to book a 1 bedroom at 31 days out. You would have to get in line behind all the folks on the wait list, and the would be pretty close to your vacation to expct that to come through. It isn't as simple as "dropping the lock off". It has to be rebooked, and that is what makes it difficult. That is why so many here wont book extra accommodations for family unless they have an understanding that things CAN NOT be changed. It's about the only way non members will understand it.
