Unfortunately, I think peoples attitudes about others comes inherently from how they were raised and their personal interactions with those different from themselves. For some people, I don't think they realize their attitude, gestures or things they say can be construed as harassing or offensive to others, because that was normal where they came from. I do think society is changing and becoming more accepting, but there will still be discrimination out there to some degree based on individual's bias or need to feel powerful over another person.
I guess it just saddens me that people can be narrow minded and not realise these things, with the media these days as well there is a lot more exposure to the world and different cultures (although saying that I remember one news network we saw on TV in I think 2007 calling the North Korean - No Ko's
