PNS suggestions/tips. What am I looking for?

Hello everyone!
5 years ago, we bought a Canon Powershot A630. It takes some pretty good quality photos, especially for a non-professional like myself (meaning the pics themselves are clear, and focused, even if the set up/lighting/framing/etc isn't all that great- I do not have a natural eye for that stuff). But it's taken a lot of abuse over the years, including being dropped, dinged, and poked by little kid fingers. It's still in decent shape, but I'm thinking we can hand that down to our oldest kid and let him abuse it till it breaks, and we should get ourselves a new camera.
I would love to get a DSLR, but I'm not interested in becoming a professional photographer, I just want to take great pictures of my kids and family and friends. So it seems to me that a DSLR would be wasted money.
So, I'm trying to find a good point and shoot for us. I don't mind a little more... complicated, if it means I'll get the pictures I want. I WILL use the auto, but to get better photos, I won't mind learning to adjust settings and whatnot. So, when it's time to go shopping (I'm thinking Christmas present for DH and I), what am I going to be looking for to get good pictures? Do you have camera suggestions? If I am going PNS, are there any good ones that will fit in a pocket?
Also, any books or website suggestions are welcome, too. :)
