From what I've heard (don't know for sure) it's so that the game is closed when the park is closed, and they don't have to pay people to moniter it overnight

I believe peace is right, it opens and closes when the DLR park does. That is why it is on PST. If I understand correctly, DLR was the first park which is why all time zones and open and close is on that schedule. correct me if i am wrong though!

Good Theory but actually it is because of VMK's own rule that two staff members must be present in the game at all times. These staff members get paid but they need to sleep as well. That's why it closes. It also closes to update itself.
