Pls inform me about Jehovah Witness

I worked with two JW women at a larger firm in Seattle. They always opted out of any sort of celebratory thing we had except at Christmas. Only, our firm always referred to our Christmas party as the "year end party" and our Christmas bonus as the "year end" bonus which apparently made it o.k. for them to attend. It was obviously a Christmas party and we exchanged gifts there and everything else, but the partners always made sure not to refer to it that way.

The only thing that kind of bothered me was that these two women would always take their vacation time over Christmas. Now, people have the right to take their vacation anytime they want to obviously but when I was young and single, as these two were, I always tried to not do that so the employees with families could take some times off around the holidays to see their family abroad and celebrate with them. Them doing this prevented other paralegals of lesser seniority to take time off and that just kind of irritated me. There are 51 other weeks throughout the year with not much going on for the rest of the world, do you have to take your vacation THAT week when it means so much to the people who do celebrate it. I just thought it was kind of mean of them to do that. Not that that has anything to do with them being JW, other than the fact that I just never got why they did it if that time of year didn't mean anything to them.

Whoa! There's a huge difference in Scripture between practicing discernment and making/issuing judgment. Christians can practice discernment in distinguishing between truth and myth as it relates to what someone is teaching. Judging, however, is an activity that God reserves strictly to Himself, especially as it relates to the final disposition of each human being.

Jesus was very clear and specific when He said "Judge not." The terms discern and judge are NOT interchangable, as much as you might want them to be in order to justify your arguments.

If you think that we are not to make any kind of judgements then you are sadly mistaken and you have misinterrepted what the scripture says about judging others. I would suggest you do a further bible study on the concept of judgement. It is "how" we judge that Jesus is speaking of NOT whether or not we should judge. Look further down in Matthew 7. Jesus talks about being on the lookout for false prophets and we will know them by their fruits. Sooooo when JW speaks of a false doctrine do you not see how this lines up with Jesus' teachings?

Yes, we are to make judgements.

As a teacher, I often have a Jehovah's Witness student. I always feel badly when they can't participate in anything that we do.

Please do not feel bad for JW students as they do not miss out even though we choose not to celebrate the holidays. As an example, every year in the summer, I have a party for my children and they also go to other non-birthday parties. Our children do participate in activities at school that do not conflict with our beliefs. Yes, my children do not get gifts at Christmas or on their birthdays but they do receive gifts when we as parents want to surprise them. If you saw my girls' toys, you would see why they do not feel left out. Nor did I as a child. We also take family vacations together at least once a year. My girls are very happy well-adjusted children who enjoy school very much and have many friends. Every teacher has told me how much they enjoy having my girls in their classrooms, even though they do not participate in certain activities.
Some people feel we do not believe in Jesus. That is simply not true. Our children are taught from the bible thay they should put faith in Jesus because of the sacrifice he made for all of us.
As one of JW, I just wanted to clear up some misconceptions. I'm not here to argue with anyone or push my beliefs on anyone. If you do have a question, please ask JW's the next time they come to your door.

(((((((((((As well as a word for people like you.....LOST)))))))))))
Actually it's you that's lost. Worshipping a man as G-d. That's pure Idolatry. I hope you will come to worship the one true G-d and become a Jew posthaste.. I'm not judging you, just speaking against heresy when I see it.. It's my ojb after all. The big guy is on my side.
Oh! Happy Chanukah! :earsgirl:

Yes, we are to make judgements.

Based on your own words, there are many interpretations of scripture. Therefore we should be tolerant of interpretations which don't agree with our own. What difference does it make to you--how will it affect your personal salvation--if someone chooses a different interpretation to follow? Let me give you a clue--it doesn't and it won't.

Bottom line, worship in a way you feel comfortable with, and allow others to worship in their own way, as long as it doesn't affect your rights.

You seem to have the concepts of judgement & discernment confused. Do an indepth study on the two and you will see there is a difference.

Trust 2funny2c when he says he knows about discernment.

I highly disagree with this. Voting in an election is in no way putting anyone ahead of God. I in fact turn to God before I go to vote to seek his guidance.

And your tolerance of Christians is the same as the Romans that would lead the Christians to the arena to be killed for sport.
And if you were a true Chistian you would know that show yourself in the manner you have only turns people away from Christianity and not to it. You aren't showing God's love in the way you are posting. Not at all.

I see very clearly how this involves the exercise of spiritual discernment, but not judgment.
Yes, we are to make judgements.
Maybe then you would be so kind as to point to any Scripture where we are specifically told that it is our right, responsibility, authority, whatever to judge other people, especially to judge their personal relationship with God. In all the years I've spent studying the Bible, I've never once come across any verse anywhere that indicates anyone except God has the right to judge others.

We are called to be discerning, but we are not and have never been called to be judges.

I just wanted to say thanks to those who have posted their experiences as a JW, as a former JW, and those with JW relations. The info provided was very enlightening and interesting :goodvibes

Jenny, I think you might have put the wrong quote in when you responded back in post 85. The quote you put to respond to was Missypie talking about JW voting in elections. Your response didn't really jive with Missypie's quote so I think there must have been an error there somewhere.

False religions such as JW and LDS that lead people away from the true message of our Lord and Savior do the ultimate harm to other people.
This may be so but more people are turned to these religions by Christians who hammer others about Chritianity instead of showing Christ's love to thme when they are witnessing. Christians turn more from Christ than these religions ever will.

Love it!!!!

Thank You it's a quote from a little babtist church I saw while traveling once and I thought "Wow that kinda sums it all up doesn't it"

I'm not really good at remembering scripture but I think it says something like
"Judge not least ye be judged" I could be wrong. I try not to reply to religious or political threads because it always ends in an argument with someone's feelings hurt.

Quite possibly they had children that would be out of school during that time. Or they just want to spend time with family since many are on holiday during that week

They don't celebrate anything because they are a cult, a false religion trying to spread their version of heresy.

I have a genuine question.

Besides this being impirically intolerant and offensive, how is it not considered a personal attack? I'm sure the practicing JW's here truly enjoy being called cult members and heretics. Why is such hate speech allowed?

You know I am Christian and my children have never had a birthday party or gotten gifts at Christmas. I never forbid them to celebrate with other. They did not participate in Halloween or Christmas activities at school. And I will not accept blood. I am not a Jehovath's Witness but a Baptist. My kids do get gifts throughout the year just because we love them and it can be something needed or just something I think they will like.
WE don't celebrate Halloween. And the focus for Christmas is not gift giving and Santa but the fact that Christ was born to be the sacrifice for our sins and to die on the cross for us. It is family time. Yes we do enjoy seeing the holiday decorations but they are just pretty things with little meaning. I'll go to MVMCP not because I'm celcbrating anything but because it is a time to enjoy a nice evening with friends and enjoy some beautiful shows.
Our main focus and celebration is Easter and again that is a family and church thing. My husband and I will both be participating a Easter drama at church. He will be one of the performers and I will be one of the interpreters for the deaf.
