Pleasure for Free???

If you are in Downtown Disney at a certain time of the early evening, can't you access Pleasure Island for free? Seems to me, our first trip in '96 we were cruising around DD in the late afternoon/early evening and just meandered over to PI without having to stick our UPH into the turnstile. Seems to me, the turnstiles were covered up with canvas. We then had full access to PI......before I get flammed, we did not do anything shifty or dishonest, it just worked out that way...completely unintentionally. Is this possible or am I remembering incorrectly??

You can definetly walk through DD West Side at any time during the day--I just flipped through my pictures from this past summer and I have pictures of us walking through. Many of the stores and restaurants are open to visit at West Side. I know that for PI, they take admission after 7pm, but you can walk through prior to that. Nothing will be open though--all of the clubs are open much later, so there won't be much to do. More things will be open at the Markeplace and West Side. Hope this helps!

announcement - I forget where I read it - that henceforth, pleasure Island will be closed until 7 pm - not even open for walk throughs! I suspect it was costing more to police it than the few open shops were making.

It is true that PI is no longer open during the day - it opens at 7 PM. Sometimes there is something called a Sneak Preview - they let people in to look around and after a certain time, you have to go out and purchase admission if you want to stay. I don't know which nights they do this but I've seen it advertised on my last trip (a week ago).
