Please turn on your blinker BEFORE you

begin to slow down or apply your brakes.

The purpose of the turn signal is to communicate what you're going to do BEFORE you do it.

Are you the person I always seem to get behind on a two lane road, 45 mph speed limit, who suddenly slows way down, then brakes hard, THEN turns on your turn signal?...thanks for the warning pal.

Or...if I'm sitting at a stop sign, waiting to pull out of a side road, and you're approaching the side road...how about a little blinker so I know you're going to turn...so I can go ahead and pull out without having to sit and wait and watch as you slowly approach and turn...never having signaled your intentions.

My saying for this behavior is:

"Turn signals are meant to ANNOUNCE your intentions, not CONFIRM them."

waiting for the first post where someone vehemently disagrees with us...:surfweb:

Slowing down doesn't necessarily mean you are turning, though.

You put your signal on before you turn. I think the standard is 100' before a turn (at least in NY).

I do agree that people need to use their signal though. Can't stand when people switch lanes or turn without signaling.

Ooh I hate this too!!!

I also hate when someone thinks they have to come to a complete, 0 mph speed before they turn a corner. This, of course, is proceeded by them slamming on their brakes to make that ssslllooowww turn. Grr.

I see it all the time. I remember everything I learned in driver's ed over 35 years ago and that includes signal BEFORE you brake/slow down to turn. I hate when someone brakes as they approach an intersection because you dont' know if they're turning or lost or afraid of intersections or what. It's common sense. It announces intent.

Breathe in .. Breathe out.. repeat.... approach fridge, grab beer and consume
repeat process until happy again

Thank you! :worship:
I yell at people all the time for this...just thought I was the only one who was annoyed by it!

I remember when I was learning to drive (WAY too many years ago) and I was going somewhere with my father. He was driving, and I was full of all the stuff I'd read in the driver's manual. We were almost home, ready to turn onto our street. He stopped at the stop sign, but didn't put his turn signal on. So I called him out on it. His response? "I always turn here - they should know that!" I suppose a lot of people think that the driver behind them is psychic.

I live on a rural farm road (it's only been paved for 5 years). I put my blinker on before I turn into my own driveway even when there's nobody behind me. Blinking before making a move is just second nature.

This is my philosophy also. Why add another decision (Do I need to use my blinker on THIS turn?)? Just signal every time!

My dd is learing to drive...and this is the one thing I'm pounding into her head.....turn signal, then brakes. It drives me nuts when I sit there, politely waiting for someone to move past me, from the opposite direction, only to have them put on their turn signal about 10' before they turn...actually pretty much as they are braking and turning!!! Then, they putz along.

Oh, that is one of my driving pet peeves too!!

That, and having someone pull right out in front of me, yet there is no one at all behind me, and I have to slow down for them. :headache: Worse yet, when they pull out in front of me and no one is behind me, and then they turn again a quarter mile up the road. I usually blow my horn at idiots like that.

The only thing a blinker means around here is the light bulb works.

This is the post I've always wanted to write! Thank you, thank you, thank you. One of my biggest pet peeves.
When I am driving behind a car, and their brake lights appear before a cross street, I just think the person doesn't use their turn signal. Then as they turn, and the blinker pops on, I think, "Do they even know what that thing is for???"

This drives me nuts too. I have drilled it into the kids' heads that this is the way to do it as well, Dh disagrees--even though he has been told several times but friends that are police officers he is wrong and get ticketed for not using his turn signal properly :rolleyes1

This also includes moving into a turning lane--your first move is INTO the turning lane and that justifies a turn signal BEFORE you move over.

Yes!!

I've experienced this a couple of times this week.

Goind down the road at 55 mph, car ahead of me slows down a very long distance before they are actually turning, and doesn't signal until right when they get ready to turn. It is annoying.

Although I will say that when I'm trying to pull out onto a road, and waiting for traffic to clear, even when someone is signaling that they are turning right onto the road where I'm sitting, I still wait until they are actually turning before I go out onto the road. But they still should signal. Not signaling is either lazy or being inconsiderate of other drivers.
