Last year (Sept) we went from Elmira NY to MCO thru Philly for around $300 each. I look at prices for Sept of 2015 and they are around close to 600 bucks! I realize it is early to be looking but man, is it going to get better? Is it the merger or supply and demand right now? You would think with gas prices dropping that the cost for jet fuel would drop as well.

I'm having the same issue with United (the best carrier choice for our part of the world). DW is a teacher and we have to come back on a particular Sunday and that is apparently the expensive part of the trip, keeping our ticket prices high. If we could shift it just one day it would be perfect but unfortunately we can't. Like you, we're looking at next fall so there's no hurry, but you still have to wonder... Can't be selling many seats at those prices! :confused3

If nobody buys a X dollars prices fall. They jack up prices now and some people buy as time goes on and seats remain open they will drop, just keep your eyes open or come home late Saturday or early Monday.

It's the same at BWI. Sunday's in March are so expensive. We are in the same position. Both working and can't split weeks. Roundtrip is running 550 to 650 each. Even returning early on Monday or late Saturday it is over 200 each way. Early Monday then results in another one night reservation. I think the merger of AT and SW hasn't helped. It's unbelievable.

You would think if they can't fill seats the prices would drop, but who knows?

This isn't going to help much, but we just found out that Frontier is leaving our airport to go to the bigger cities. So much for low fares and a non-stop flight to MCO.

The fact that mergers are going on isn't helping and even though the price of fuel is down, doesn't mean we'll see a trickle down effect from that anytime soon in airline pricing.

Looking at the month of September for a 7 night stay, I see a bunch of dates with $214 RT... all on United. Delta gets $365.

Besides the mergers, they have reduced capacity. Instead of 4 flights a day with 75% seats full, they fly 2 or 3 with close to 100% full. That allows them to reduce expenses plus they can charge more with higher demand to get on those flights. Reduced fuel costs doesn't matter, if they can fill seats at the higher price they will.

Tricky thing with small cities is if they are not filling seats, they sometimes end service rather than reduce prices.

When in September are you looking? That can make a difference. I live in Rochester, NY and we are going to Disney at the end of August into the beginning of September. We goofed when we booked to come home the Friday before Labor Day. Ticket prices are over $300 per person round trip no matter what airline. If I adjust by a day in either direction, it comes in at about $242 round trip. I'm probably going to drop a day off my current reservation at Disney and add a room only for the first night at the beginning so I can get a cheaper flight. I'm hoping that a room discount will come out for that date.

OP have you looked into flying out of Rochester or Syracuse rather than Elmira? You may find cheaper flights. :)

Our dates are Sept 8-18. I have looked at Rochester and Albany but we won't save much after paying for a hotel for the night and parking our car

Do you have to go through Philadelphia?

United has three round trip itineraries at $214pp all through O'hare
Depart: 6:45a-12:35p
Return: 10:30a-4:25 p

Depart: 6:45a-2:18p
Return: same as above

Depart: 4:50p-10:50p
Return: same as above

For an extra $55, the return flight can be 4:10p-11:15p

Flying out of Ithica lowers the cost to $210, but that's returning to Elmira.

Why is US Air so much more expensive than United?

Maybe because Upstate NY to Chicago to Orlando isn't a route many people will take. They are more likely to take NY-Philadelphia-Orlando. :confused3

The Airlines have reduced the number of flights and the number of seats to keep prices up. The trains are running full and most people will not go by bus, leaving only driving(car, gas, meals, motels and tolls), which for long distance is not really cheaper then Air.

Sadly I really see no change.

Just booked my Southwest flights from Chicago to MCO for June. Came out to be $389 per person round trip which is about $90 more per person than I've ever paid before. I've read that the best time to book a flight cost-wise is like 6 or 7 weeks before, but I have no patience for that :sad2:.

I hate to throw money down the drain by not waiting a little longer but I also want to make sure I get a flight on the days I need to travel. Who knows maybe you wait too long and prices don't drop :guilty:

I just took a preliminary look at the fares for mid-August. So at least I know what we are dealing with. :scared: Southwest is not yet open for our dates (and I know we have plenty of time to book) and I'm hoping there is better news there. I would prefer SWA anyway. I know that for our July trip USAirways was not very competitive (I guess not so surprising since the merger). Thank heavens for SWA.

I agree with your approach. While this method may not get you the absolute rock bottom price, your peace of mind and meeting your time needs is worth something, too. Besides, prices on everything else go up and I don't mind paying a little more each year.

Right now I'm waiting for some better fares from here in western Canada to MCO in mid November. We have absolutely no flexibility regarding which days to go and lately, every day around ours in both directions is way cheaper than the days we have to have. Frustrating.

So I saw a "if h*ll freezes over..." price that I would grudgingly pay (and were the exact flights we wanted), if I had to and put a "Farelock" on it just to have this as a fallback position. Today, I saw a better price for our days but with a very long layover on the way back.

So, at the end of the farelock week, I'll have to decide whether to buy at that fare, get the less desirable layover and save a few bucks, or if we're really lucky, our perfect flights will drop even lower that the poorer fights. Or, of course, keep looking, in the hopes that "something" will come along.

By the way, most people will tell you to buy at a price you find acceptable and stop looking. Good advice but I never take it. Even when I've bought at a higher price than I've wanted, the flights we need have never come down in price and we buy as soon as we can in most cases. True, you might get a better fare a few weeks out but on a route to a warm place during the winter, those flights always fill up and it's just a matter of when they do. It's even harder over Christmas or March Break season.

Yeah, it's great to get great deals on airfare, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay a bit more to get the flights that you really need or want.

Sorry for the long-ish post!:)

Assuming Philadelphia and Sat-Sat, Frontier has one flight for $165 RT:
depart: 6:10p-8:50p
return: 8:50a-11:10a

And another for $175 RT:
depart: 6:10p-8:50p
return: 9:40p-11:59p
