Please Tell me I'm Not Alone Regarding Work Potlucks

It depends on who makes it, is my rule. I'm a server and I know most of the people are as germaphobe as I am, and there are a lot of good chefs where I work... I'll eat their food. But others, the ones who pretty much ONLY wash their hands at work, or who just gross me out no matter what they'd do, are the ones who I won't eat their food.

But, a lot of these people are working full time, and go to school full time so most of their stuff is store bought anyway... and lots of Voodoo doughnuts.

Okay, I'll say it. Work potlucks weird me out something crazy.

I don't know how clean my co-workers keep their kitchens. I can see how well they don't clean the kitchen here. I don't wish to eat mystery dishes. I can't try them and say they are horrible, right? No matter what, you HAVE to say, "Oh, that's yummy!"

So, tomorrow I shall eat the store-bought stuff and leave it at that.

Am I alone in this?

Nope right there with you. I only eat homemade from people I trust and I eat the store bought stuff. But then again everyone at work knows I'm a picky eater (heck some of them will tell me what's in thier dishes before I even get to the luncheon) and no one expects me to eat anything just because of me, they never know it has anything to do with the fact that I think they're a slob.

Although mostly I don't eat foods because I have some texture/taste issues so I won't eat 90% of anything anyway, I am not overly germ phobic but if you're a slob in the work kitchen you're problably a slob at home as well and I don't want to eat it but that's only a few people out of 60.

Never, ever go to a Baptist church. You sooooo won't fit in. We all loooooove a pot-luck.

I used to be a jail guard and the inmates did the food prep. I have lots of stories.
After I left the jail it took me YEARS to be able to eat soup outside of my own home. It also took me years to be able to even consider buying anything from a bake sale.
Where I work now we have awesome potlucks and I just try not to think of people not washing their hands etc. Having said that reading this thread has grossed me out LOL:rotfl:

I have never heard of people having issues with potlucks, I'm always learning thins on dis

I hadn't until last year. One girl refused verbally to come to the potluck when I was interning at Turner Communications. Made a big deal about pets and dirt. All she did was turn everyone OFF. It's okay to have your druthers, just keep it to yourself. It's insulting to everyone who does participate.

We had ours the week before Thanksgiving. It was AMAZING. We usually don't do much with the on air folks and they really stepped up to the plate, LITERALLY! The food was so good one of the ladies here had everyone email their recipes and made a little ebook of them! :lmao: Last week everyone had to bring in breakfast, one dept a day. Incredibly good. :thumbsup2

Better never go to an RV park either. Potlucks are a major part of the RV lifestyle, since our kitchens are too small to really make a full elaborate meal. And wow, some RVers can really cook. :thumbsup2

We have them at my office all the time. Nobody ever gets sick from the food that other people bring in. I have been eating other people's food for 59 years and haven't been sick yet. I refuse to become a germophobic. All the antibiotics and antibacterial stuff is just causing more problems than they solve. My Mom use to say, you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die. I very, very rarely get sick.

I survived!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I was very polite and had a taste of everything. I just kept my weirded-outs to myself.

I am so glad I am not alone, though. I kept an eye out and noticed two others NOT touching the home-made stuff. :lmao:

The thing is, I'm not afraid of germs. It is just seeing how some people treat the kitchen here makes me have these feelings of vomit. The uncleanliness. The way some people re-use their lunch dishes without washing them. Stuff like that.

We had our Christmas Pot Lunch at work today and the food and desserts were wonderful! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2
