I have just made priority seating for Mickey's Backyard BBQ for December 9, 2003.

I have never been to this before, but it looks like it will be a blast!

I will be going with my two sons, ages 14 and 11, my mom, my SIL, my nephew 14, and my niece 4.

My sons are not that excited about it right now, so I am asking all of you to tell me your opinions of this. I need to know if this is something that they will really enjoy!!

Thanks so much,
Kim:D

We, DH, DS then 3, and myself attended this years ago. DS is now 7. It was a lot of fun even though DS was extremely tired. The food was good and the character interaction was GREAT!! We had to leave as the line dancing and games were starting because DS was just too tired but for our first character meal it was wonderful. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time there - we sure did!! :Pinkbounc I'd do it again but DH doesn't like having too many things putting us on a time schedule and we already have some others planned.

Sorry to say but I didn't think it was so great!!! I found it pretty expensive for bbq food. Hamburgers, chicken, and salads(look up the menu). We went in May of 2000. There was a country band and chip and dale, goofy, mickey and minnie were there also. Goofy did some dancing. At one point mickey and minnie were on the side and a line formed for pictures and autographs. They did have some carnival type games, maybe one or two. Oh yeah and the drinks. It says unlimited drinks, well you have to walk all the way from one side to the other for beer, wine or soda. You were able to get cans of soda and the beer and wine were served in small glasses. By the time you make it back you need to go back, HA HA !!
I hate to be a downer but I loved so many other character meals better.

Christine,

I'm interested in the BBQ, too, but what other character meals would you recommend? We're going in October.

Thanks.

Maria

Hi Marie. We are doing Mickey's Backyard BBQ. We are also planning on spending most of the afternoon in Fort Wilderness, just exploring. As for the other character meals....we like Chef Mickey's(Contemporary), Crystal Palace (MK), 1900 Park Fare (GF), and we will be trying the breakfast at 'Ohana this summer. Check over on Deb Wills site for really good info about character dining.

We did Mickey's BBQ last June and had an absolute blast. No, the food is not worth the price, but the food is never worth the price when it comes to character meals. The food is usually just good not great. You're paying for the character interaction and I think this is the best one!
After eating dinner, the band and your hosts introduce themselves. The characters come and go 3 or 4 times throughout the evening so that you can get pictures and autographs. In between their arrivals, the band plays, the hosts tell corny jokes, a lasso roper entertains you, and an instructer teaches you a couple of line dances. The finale is with the characters doing the line dances with you. Nothing beats doind the chicken dance and conga with goofy. The whole evening lasts about 3 hours.
We did this on a day that we were not going to the parks. We spent the day at the resort pool and shopping at Downtown Disney. I couldn't see the kids doing a park all day and then the BBQ. It would just be too much.
Anyway, we had an awesome time! Hope you do too!!

We did not have a good experience here either. It was June, 2001 and the problem was not the food or the price, but the character interaction. The characters come out onto the dance floor a few times during the night and you just line up. To us that was no different than just lining up in the park. We prefer the meals that the characters make their way around. The carnival games were a big joke. Our elementary school puts out better games at our Fall Festival. I am a huge Disney fan and this is one of the very rare things that I criticize. It's just not done well.

Hi Maria,
The other character meals and other restaurants that we thought we good were:
The Crystal Palace-pooh and friends, the food was great and so was the interaction.
Liberty Tree Tavern- minnie, goofy, chip, dale and pluto-interaction was great and the food was pretty good.
Hollywood and Vine- Character Lunch was great and they also had a fantasmic dinner pkg. The same great food less the characters-minnie,pluto, goofy, chip, dale.
Brown derby- high priced food not so great sized portions.
Germany- I forgot the name but we had an outrageous lunch there. They had the band playing and the kids had a ball.
Mexico- The food was again outrageous even the kids enjoyed it. Don't forget to have a margarita!!!
Espn-(on the boardwalk) the food was great.
I feel like I am missing something but all these places were great- oh yeah-
Chef Mickey, We thought the interaction was great but the buffet was better at the crystal palace. The food was alright(dinner)
Happy Eating!!!
