We are doing our first family trip to Disney World (hubby and I had both gone when were younger and had nothing to do with the planning) in August. In order to do this trip at all, we have to be frugal and careful with our $. We are staying offsite at Windsor Palms so will have a full kitchen. We plan on eating breakfast at "home" and probably dinner as well so the kids can get a little bit of a break/nap (a crockpot is available and will be utilized). I am open to packing lunches for us as well but wouldn't be opposed to CS lunches if it worked out. We are spending 5 days in the parks (2 days at MK and 1 day each at the other parks).

While I do want to be smart and careful with our money, I also want to enjoy what Disney has to offer and I know a big part of that is food. Even though we might not have many meals at the parks I would still like to enjoy special food items at the parks - especially at Epcot!

So, what food items are on your must eat list for the different parks? TIA!

At MK it's definitely the dole whip float for me. They are very large. I like to split it with another person. At HS I like to have a cupcake from Starring rolls. The cupcakes are very split-able too.

DOLE WHIP FLOAT!:cool1:

At MK - The waffle sandwiches at Sleepy Hollow. We only discovered these on our last trip and were kicking ourselves for not having tried them before. We liked the Spicy Chicken and the Nutella and fresh fruit. The 3 of us shared them both. YUM!!!

Same place, but we buy the funnel cake usually with powdered sugar and strawberry topping. It's big enough for 3 to share.

I totally agree on the cupcakes being shareable. Both ds9 and I got our own this past trip and we each ended up throwing out half because we couldn't finish it and didn't want to carry it around.

Rocky Road Candy apple from Karmal Kuchdd (sp?) in Germany/EPCOT, Dole whip, Sweet Cream cheese pretzel from Aunty Gravity. Grand Marnier slushy from France.

These all sounds awesome! I have heard of the Dole Whip Floats- that is definitely going on my list!

Are the waffle sandwiches something you could have for lunch or are they more of a snack?

Gotta try a turkey leg. They are smoked and not everyone in my family loves them but we all share one at least once.

In Epcot, Love the fish and chips from Rose and Crown. They have a walk up window, and you can find a place by the water to sit and eat. Get a few and share.

At the American pavillion, a great snack to share is the funnel cake topped with ice cream and chocolate syrup. I never had that combination anywhere else before and it was great. It is huge, 5 of us shared it.

Economically speaking, Cosmic Rays has a half roasted chicken meal that is good and large enough to share. My favorite CS is Columbia Harbor house. Yummy clam chowder and salads with chicken tenders, and fish and chips as well (but I think Rose and Crown's are better).

Edited to add:
Lots of tasty treats at the bakery in Norway too. Can't remember what we had but we picked up a few items and shared them and all were good!

Always get a Mickey Bar, available everywhere at the hundreds of ice cream carts in the parks. Margarita and chips and queso at La Cava in the Mexican pavilion - I love the avocado Margarita. Ham and cheese on a baguette in France - dying to try the new ice cream parlor in France too. Someone already mentioned the Nutella and fruit Waffle in the Magic Kingdom. We went there three separate times on our last trip - it is amazing.

Another vote for Cosmic Rays! The portions seem huge! We've split two half rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes and a veg between 4 of us (DH, myself, DS14, DS9) for under $20 total. Was delicious and filling.

Adding a vote for that La Cava Tequilla- avacado margarita. It was delish!

Tangierine Cafe / Morocco Pavilion - Epcot - Shawarma Platters are yummy and special. Big servings and definitely "shareable" to make it more cost-effective.

Norway bakery - School bread or the Troll Horn. (their sweet pretzels are huge but our kids thought they were dry and tasteless)

Hot sandwiches and flatbreads at Pinocchio Village Haus in MK are pretty decent sizes, and I consider those shareable too - and different than the standard chicken nugget fare you find everywhere else.

The "big" cupcakes found at Starring Rolls, Pizza Planet, Studio Catering Company and a few other places. They are big enough for 2-3 ppl to share as a dessert.

FWIW, if it were a matter of budget, I would say that I really have NO "must eat" items. I would rather go to Disney and pack sandwiches every day then do a shorter trip or no trip. That being said, I am not a "foodie".

When my kids were small and we went to the parks during slow season (mid-January) we ate breakfast before heading out and dinner after leaving the parks (when they closed between 5 pm and 7pm most days). And lunch was almost always just a counter service burger or pizza.

But if I am forced to answer..... Mickey bar comes to mind first... followed closely by turkey leg (not a love shared by others in my family) and Dole Whip. Other than that I find that I don't tend to LOVE things that others here rave about (School bread comes to mind first, as well as cupcakes, and Mickey waffles). My biggest suggestion would be START SMALL. Share a portion of something to find out if your family likes it. If it turns out to be a hit, you can always buy another!

Have a wonderful trip!!

The waffle sandwiches are large and can easily be split by two people. I just wanted to throw in that I could not wait to try these and when I did I did not like them at all. We got the sweet and spicy chicken and the ham to split between my family of 4 and the majority of it went in the garbage. No one liked them at all, the sandwiches were way too sweet.

Norway has a large sandwich that can be split by two people and their sandwiches are delicious. They sell them in the bakery.

As well as France has a delicious inexpensive ham and cheese croissant.

Don't forget the soft pretzels, they even have a Mickey shaped one.

We are not sweet eating kind of family, so we don't go for the mickey bars, or cupcakes and such.

The slow roasted Pork Shank at Gastons Tavern in New Fantasyland was very good. My DH and DD's shared one and they were like carnivores that found a treat! Salty, cracklin' goodness. Gastons answer to the smoked turkey leg, which is a good deal for the protein energy you get as well.

This is really good point - and I agree, if it was between not going or eating at the parks I would definitely choose going and packing our food everyday. I guess I would have to classify myself (and my husband) as "foodies" as we do seek out new experiences with food, especially when we are visiting someplace new. Good tip on "trying" something first before buying one for everyone- thanks!

Udon and tempura shrimp. Not really shareable, but not very expensive. So good.

Does your hotel shuttle bus you to WDW? Parking is $15 a day. Anyways if you go to DtD Earl of Sandwich and Wolfgang Pucks Express are good counter service places.

Pizza Planet at Hollywood Studios is good. You can easily share. At AK, the Pizza Safari or Flame Tree Barbeque. Portions are huge, can easily share.
