You are backing up 50% of the time still. I don't understand why doing the backing on the front end would be safer than the back. I am thinking about my local stores. The spaces are angled. So backing into a space would seem to be more dangerous because you would be going against the natural flow of traffic.
I definitely see that logic in a store parking lot. (I hate to back up on either end of the errand if I can avoid it, and I'll take a far space and walk a bit more if it means I can get a pull-through.)
But I do think the back-in thing makes sense if you are arriving someplace individually, but will be leaving at the same time as a lot of people - like picking up kids at school.
