You all have been great, but I'm stressing over this use year business. My guide finally returned my call, but we had left to go to the movies. She says April and June are left for use years for SSR. (We were originally assigned August, but I'm not sure that's the best situation for our vacation habits. We will typically vacation right after school ends in early June).

So if we go with a June UY, we will get a fresh set of points at the beginning of June. Is this correct??

That also means that if we want to bank our year's points, we will have to make that transaction by Nov. 30th. Now, what if we do that and decide later that maybe we can squeeze in something between that time and and the following June. Can we borrow from the following year's allotment while still retain the current's year banked points to use the following summer?? Aye, yay, aye. This can get sticky.

This is just a huge chunk of money and I don't want to screw up our future vacations because I don't clearly understand the procedures.

Thanks!!

Yes, as long as you make sure to use the banked points when you make the ressie first in that next use year. Frankly, I wouldn't stress too much about which use year. In 8 years, we have never had a need to cancel last minute, so it hasn't ever been an issue, and our use year is March while we usually travel in January.

From the research I completed prior to my recent DVC purchase, I can verify that you are correct.

Once you bank points in a year, you can no longer access those points until the next use year begins. So, if you bank all points before November 30, 2004, you must find some kind of use for them between June 1, 2005 and May 31, 2006. After May 31, 2006, any remaining 2004 points in your account will be lost. (They can only be banked for one year and then must be used during that following year.)

However, if you have banked your 2004 points and later decide to take a vacation prior to June 1, 2005, you can still utilize the "borrow" feature of DVC to move any portion of the 2005 alotment into the 2004 use year. In doing this, you effectively "swap" your 2005 and 2004 points. The only drawback to this maneuver is that the moves cannot be reversed. Once the 2005 points get moved to the 2004 use year, they must be used in 2004 or they will be forfeited. Once the 2004 points get moved into the 2005 use year, they must be used in 2005 or they will be lost as well.

Does that clear it up?

Does that clear it up?
Absolutely!

That make me comfortable with a June UY...I will know by Nov if we're going to take a family vacation and use the year's points and in a worst case scenario and we bank all of the points, I'll just borrow from the following year (or "swap" as you put it).

Thanks so much.

VickiVM,
You are really doing your homework! So, do you think you will go with a Jun UY?

I finally got to talk with our guide in person just a while ago. She's changing the paperwork to reflect June, not Aug. as our UY. Dec and Feb are gone. I'm comfortable with that. At least for the next 12 years (our youngest is in kinder now) we'll primarily be vacationing in summer so no matter what juggling with points I do the rest of the year, I'll always have a new set to work with at the beginning of summer (unless, of course, I borrow from them.)

I'm good. It's all good!!

Thanks, everyone.

Vicki... Glad to see it is working out for you.

Now, a little advice. No more stressing! This is supposed to be fun!

Start planning your first vacation! And let me be the first to say, "Welcome Home!" :wave2: ::MickeyMo

Vicki, you can make it simple by creating a use year chart for the particular use year month you own. For example, a June UY chart looks like this:

Use Year.....Vacation Dates
2003.....Jun 1, 2003 through May 31, 2004
2004.....Jun 1, 2004 through May 31, 2005
2005.....Jun 1, 2005 through May 31, 2006
2006.....Jun 1, 2006 through May 31, 2007
2007.....Jun 1, 2007 through May 31, 2008
2008.....Jun 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009
and so on....

Every year on your anniversary month you receive your new allotment of points.

You can bank points from any year into the following year.

You can borrow points from any year and put them into the preceeding year.

Any points banked or borrowed cannot be moved again and must be used within the year into which they were moved.

The 100% banking mark is 6-months after your use year month, so for June it's the end of November (Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov combined = 6-months)

It's really pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
