Please help with British word meaning

Hello! Hope you don't mind a silly question. What does a "plaster" mean? I've read something written in Britain and it compared the pain to having a "plaster" ripped off. I am GUESSING that it is what we refer to as an adhesive bandage, or Band-Aid. Can you help?

Thank you! I must admit when I read "plaster" my first thought was a plaster cast used to mend a broken bone. But from the context of the sentence, that didn't make much sense. ;)
