Ok here is my delima, DFiance's family is coming to visit during the weekend of the 4th. Of course we want them to be comfortable, etc while they are here and "showing" off a little never hurts...lol. However we are on a tight budget and trying to figure out where they will sleep as it's going to be 2-3 nights. We have a 4th bedroom of sorts off of our dining room. It's where the screened patio would have been, but the owners (we rent) enclosed the patio, put up walls, installed windows (with vertical blinds) and a heavy door. So in other words it's like an interior room, only it has no A/C vents in it, it does have electrical outlets and a light in the ceiling. We wanted to get a window A/C but DFiance says "no" because we have windows that open sideways, not up and down like you need for those. We live in FL, so A/C is required..lol! I really want to fix up this room as we have been using it right now as a dog house when we are out (leave the door open for the dogs to go in and out of this room). It is seperated from the dining room by a sliding glass door. I posted the pic to show what I mean.
One idea I had was to clean up the room, lay down some indoor/outdoor or peel and stick type flooring. Open the slider and allow the A/C to flow into the room. I am just not sure how well it will cool doing this. Maybe a fan in the door way... But I did want them to have some privacy too... any ideas?
Can a window A/C but put in windows that open R to L, and if so whats the cheapest price I may find one for.

Since you rent I wouldn't lay out the cash to fix up a room for a 2-3 night stay. Also since there is no A/C in there I wouldn't even attempt it. Also since you have been using it as a "dog house". I don't think that is good for the sinuses. (I am allergic to dogs.)
You say this is 4 bedroom house? Do you have enough beds for them to sleep in? We usually kick the kids out and have them sleep in sleeping bags or give up our room.

If that isn't an option I would call them and tell them the situation, maybe they can help with the solution. You could also suggest some nearby hotels for them to stay in. I would rather stay in a hotel than in a room without A/C. I CANNOT sleep without it. I also get "sick" from a blowing fan.

I guess what I am saying is I (couldn't it would me sick) & would not like to sleep in that room.

Good Luck! I am sure you will figure it out.

When I say dog house, I mean I let the dogs sleep in there when we are not home to supervise them in the house, so we have dog hair in the air throughout the house. I'm trying to figure out if the AC vent above the dining room would move enough air to cool the room... or if anyone knows if you can get a window unit with the windows we have.
We plan on using it more than just that weekend, have a little brother who likes to overnight, etc. But need a cheap, quick solution for this upcoming visit.
We do have two other bedrooms, but our goddaughters sleep in toddler beds to no go there....

ahh the voice of experiance growls in my head as i type:) ok,, window unit will not work in those with out a major reworking of the area, there is no way that vent is going to comfortabley cool that much additional space as i bet owners are not the type to have over installed ac, you are probably beter off trying to u se teh room as a sun room, and let the family bunch up in other rooms, the added stress on the ac would probably rob efficiency from rest of house, i think they probably used that area as a breakfast nook or sun portch for evening? cannot se that ever beinga planned daily full use area:)

I was just telling DFiance maybe they could hold off till the winter... we DO have lots of blankets...lol! Thanks for the advice all... I just hate to have that extra space waste away.

A cheap quick solution is those "air mattresses" to be used in the other bedrooms. They are not that bad actually. Put the kids in one room and let the adults have the other rooms.
Or have the kids "camp" in your room.

I like the air mattress idea. If you've been using that room as the dog's room, it probably smells like dog. You may not notice it, but someone who doesn't live there probably would, especially if sleeping in there. I also wouldn't want to sleep in a room w/o a/c.
