After many changes of mind, DS8 decided on his Science experiment for 3rd grade & we're going with the best way to clean a penny with choices of vinegar, coke and soapy water. Please vote for the title you like best or give DS a suggestion. Thanks !!

How about letting your 3rd grader name/do the project any way he wants as long as he completes all the steps in the rubric.

I don't know about your school, but at ours parents are encouraged to help with projects, which means it won't necessarily look like a child did the whole thing. Can you imagine how crappy all the projects would look like if parents didn't actually help?

At our school the focus is on learning both subject matter and responsibility, not making the project look pretty. Parents are expected to help by guiding the child and helping gather the necessary materials. A child will gain more confidence in his abilities through a "crappy looking" project that he did himself, than one so clever and perfect it's obvious the parent did the work.

Well wish I could but I can't. It is expected that there is as the teacher worded it "strong parental involvement" in each step of the project which is supposed to look professional. I have all the exact details needed in the 8 page instruction sheets given out, which in the way it is worded alone, took me several tries & clarifications with the teacher via e-mail to understand .

Definitely not the science projects of my day But as the teacher explained she wants her students to participate in every part of the experiment, 4 page report and then presentation board etc. but it is the parent's responsibility that the report is typed, the board looks professional etc. etc with the child assisting.

That is how ours are too- in grade school we would routinely get projects home that were parent/child things- one time we had a diarama where she had to do half and I had to do half- used to irk the crap out of me when she came home saying "mommy you have homework"! The science fair was one of the parent/child projects.
Some people on the Dis seem to think that your 7 year old should be able to do everything and anything with no help from a parent! God forbid you help your kid out in anyway. If you want to then some Dis'er will step in and give you the "your child should be doing it not you" line!

We do this in my 5th grade science class--using several different things. Vinegar/salt mixture does a great job.

DS is beginning hour 3 & so far lemon juice comes in 1rst, followed by vinegar/salt mix & then a distant 3rd Coke

Sorry, I already did 3rd grade and I don't need to repeat it. I take a very active role in my daughter's education which means asking leading questions about what is going on, making sure she has the supplies she needs and guiding her if she gets stuck. I stop short of actually doing the work for her.

We're in one of the best districts in our state and starting in kindergarten the teachers stress having kids do the work themselves to the best of their ability. They'll actually mark something lower if it's obvious a parent helped. I personally like "crappy" looking projects knowing my child put her best effort. It's a million times better than if I did it for her.

I totally agree with you. I rather DS had done the entire experiment to the best of his 8 year old capability but then he would get an F for not following the directions. These were for a parent to assist in every step, have a professional board and a typed report with computer generated graphs which he only could do with my assistance. Same outcome, he did his experiment & disproved his hypothsis but "everything else" is just a ton of work for me & I still have to buy the tri fold board, raised lettering, pre-cut headings at Get Smart, specific glue (so items can be moved if need) etc. That we'll tackle next weekend !!

That's just crazy. What happens to the poor kids whose parents work long hours and come from a large family where time for things like this is a premium? A kid like that could do a great job if the entire project was based on his ability but because mom or dad has to participate the child could get a bad grade. What does that teach a kid?
