Please! Help Stop Global Warming!!

Bring cloth bags to the market. Tote your own cloth bags to the store instead of plastic and paper bags, reducing waste and requiring no additional energy. David also suggests carrying your own garment bag to the drycleaners to avoid bringing home plastic bags and wire hangers.

Good tips. Speaking of cloth...use cloth diapers and cloth feminine products. Landfills are just full of plastic/paper filled with urine, feces, and blood.

What exactly should we do?

No wait..I see the suggestions.

I can't think that a lot of people will give up convenience voluntarily to take these steps. Best way is to vote in people who will pass laws in that direction.

I am not interested in a hybrid car (before you rip into me, note that I don't drive to work) and I'm not really going to take the time to check where things came from and how much energy was expended to make them before I buy them.

I totally agree with this. Lots of people (myslef included) were quasi forced into recycling. we were given the boxes and if yours was the only one on the street without on on trash pickup, you're neighbors thought you were evil.

The bigger thing we need is politicians who are aware of the problem and aren't discounting it.

In the last year my city (and most of the communities around me) stopped recycling pickup. It's actually sad, cuz I know a lot of people no longer do it at all.

Could we all email AL Gore and ask him to stop using his jet? Here's some more on Al. I guess 'it's do as I say and not as I do'.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2006-08-09-gore-green_x.htm

Umm okay so Gore might not use green energy, has some huge houses and has stock in a naughty company that his family has had for years, but that doesn't mean you should discount all of FACTS in the movie or on reliable scientific sources.

Please show me an non-opinion/editorial scientific source that proves it's not happening.

Gore may not be ready to turn kermit-green, but he's doing more than anyone else by educated people about what is happening than he ever could all by himself.

Only by turning the tide so that people actually believe this is happening, can we get our government to do something about it.

I do believe it's happening, but I don't know if humans are making the huge impact or not. It could be a cycle that we're assisting, but not causing.

I believe some form of global warming is taking effect. All you have to do is just look around the past 30 years and notice the changes.

Is it a natural occurrence that happens in pattern's over a period of time?

Probably and I firmly believe science still doesn't have all the answers and that we are willing to jump off the deep end before we know all the facts.

Does man made pollution have a hand in this?

Will lowering our emissions output reverse the current warming trend?

I don't feel that much can be done to reverse the changes that we are going through. One thing I am certain of is, if we as a people can lower the pollution we create, then we all would be better off. We as Americans need to face some harsh truths that aren't being discussed.

I keep hearing about how the Kyoto treaty and how America needs to ratify and abide by it. Yet, I never hear any of the GW experts talk about how it let India and China off the hook and made them exempt from any changes in pollution output. How can any serious discussion take place when you allow something like that to happen? China, India, Mexico, and Russia are some of the worst polluters in the world yet they get a free pass? Doesn't make sense and hurts any real discussion of Global warming and how to stop it.

We have jobs fleeing this country at a tremendous rate and a lot of them are going to those places mention above. So why make it easier for them to do so by placing more restrictions on America? We as a nation are pretty clean (emissions wise) compared to other producing nations. China will never submit to any plan that gets in their way of becoming the only world super power. They're one of the worst nations pollution wise and they just don't seem to care. India doesn't seem to care either and is content on becoming an industrialised nation at any cost. This isn't propaganda, it's fact and you can see the facts and figures yourself. Just look up how polluted they are and what their pollution output is. It's a real eye opener.

The Democrats in 04 brought up the fact that we have too many high paying jobs going overseas, yet would talk about joining Kyoto in the next sentence. As hard as some try you can't have it both ways. We need honest and open discussion on what the changes this country would go through, if we sign and abide by a treaty like Kyoto. I don't think starving Americans will care too much about the plight of the polar bear we they can't provide for their families. It's going to take a lot of sacrifice on every ones part. We also need the top polluting nations in the world to abide by the treaty as well. Does anyone have any idea how to get China and Russia to play by the rules? I would love to hear real world solutions, not just theories, what if's or maybes.

On one last note. You do realise that you're discussing Gobal warming on a website devoted to Disney and it's many themeparks around the world? WDW is a major user of electrical and fossil type fuels. The electricity they must use on a daily basis has to be enormous. Think about how much they use in one theme park, let alone 4. How about the power that is required just to run the AC in the rooms at their many resorts they own? Isn't that type of power usage for just a entertainment industry, considered unhealthy for the enviroment? Food for thought.

Global warming and how to combat it, is going to take more than just lip service. It's going to take sacrifice from everyone involved and probably be painfull for most. Severe changes usually are

As librarian I always want to find both sides of the story.
If anyone wants to look at the other side of things (that global warming is NOT happening) there is a ton of information here:
http://epw.senate.gov/pressitem.cfm?party=rep&id=264777

I honestly don't know what to believe. I'll be really happy if it is false, but it doesn't hurt to change our ways.

A lot of what we here is meant to scare us. ... we've done a lot already that's not being reported. For instance, according to the EPA, since 1970, the "total emissions of the six principal air pollutants dropped by 53 percent."

Good points!

Do I believe that Global Warming is happening? YES That is fairly obvious.

Do I believe that I am the cause... NO

How can they back up their scare tactics claiming that we are causing global warming, when emissions have dropped 53% while there has been no corresponding drop in the rate of Global Warming. In fact, they are saying that Global Warming has increased faster than ever. Where is the correlation??? :confused3

Well, HELLO, long ago, Canada and half of the USA were frozen over. The ice has been melting and the Globe has been warming, with or without our assistance. You know what they have found in the frozen ice? Remnants of animals and tropical foilage and fruits.... That is how warm the earth once was... long before you or I existed.

You know, I have to eat... DH has to go to work (in a vehicle) I need a home for my family... I am sorry, but I do not feel any guilt for these things. I cannot stop living my life. I could watch An Inconvenient Truth a dozen times, and that would not change the fact that I and my family need food, shelter, water, etc...

If the powers that be want to work together to explore better energy sources, better ways of handling waste, etc... Then that is WONDERFUL!!! We should all care about this Earth that we live on. :)

However, I personally refuse to feel guilty for the very fact that I and my family are alive and breathing.

I don't think people should feel guilty. I don't, but I do try to do little things that will just plain make this a better world to live in whether global warming happens or not. Recycling doesn't take that much time. I don't mind doing it at all. I did downsize my car from a Dodge Durango (big gas guzzler) to a Hyundai Sante Fe. I was really glad I'd done this when the gas prices rose, but I am also glad that I might be helping conserve resources a little.

I see this as no different than not littering. You either want to live in a clean, beautiful world or not. There are people who litter and say that the little trash they drop isn't going to make that big a difference. Add all those people littering just a little together and it makes for a big mess. Not littering takes so very little effort and yet, I see it all the time. On the Westside of DTD last week, I watched a family take a huge amount of trash out of their car and leave it in the parking lot. There was a trash can about 15 feet from their car. When I pointed the trash can out to them, the man informed me that Disney employees people to pick the stuff up. After they left, I picked it up and threw it in the trash can. It took longer for the guy to tell me why he couldn't do it than it took me to toss the stuff.

It takes very little effort to do the little things that could make this a better world. Guilt shouldn't be the driving force. Making the world better should be. Do what you can, as an individual. If everyone says that it is not their problem or that they can't make a difference, this world will be a pretty sorry place in a few years.

As for other countries, I admit that I haven't a clue. However, the fact that they are wasting fuels, not recycling and generally making a mess of their countries is no reason for me to give up. I will continue to follow my own personal crusade to do whatever I can for the future. Hopefully, I will make a difference. Either way, at least I will know I tried.

Look where you got your info..when was the last time Bush or any of his people told us the truth about anything??? Just saying...

I agree. I recently read that the polar ice caps on Mars are also melting, and some of the "frozen" rivers are too. That would lead me to believe that the sun is the cause of the warming, not mankind.

Are there things we could do to slow down the process? Perhaps...if every one on earth participated, and started yesterday. But it would only slow down the process, not stop it.

The one advantage that we DO have is the same technology that many blame for the problem. We at least have the advantage of monitoring what is happening in the rest of the world, unlike our ancestors, so we might be able to respond before we are annihilated. For instance, it's not as if the ocean levels are going to rise overnight. We WILL have enough warning to relocate, as long as we heed those warnings. Difficult? Yes. Impossible? No. Our ancestors probably didn't truly realize until it was too late, and they certainly didn't have the means to evacuate whole towns in a day or two, or cross continents or oceans.

No, I don't know if it is or not. I just have a hard time believeing anything that comes from the government to begin with.

I can't vouch for every single figure that the EPA has listed, but quality of air has improved greatly since the EPA was formed in 1970. As a ex factory Ford trained dealership technician, i can truthfully assure you that the cars of today are much, much cleaner than those of the 1970's and 80's. The on board electronics and pollution control devices are high tech and the newer generation of engines are light years ahead of what they were even 20 years ago. I worked for Ford from 1986 to 1998 as a technician and spent 3 years in parts after that. What India, China, and Russia have/use as automobiles can't compare. Our cars are definitely cleaner running than they were in the 1970's and the improved air quality is proof of that.

Even those gas guzzling SUV's are clean running compared to their predecessors a few decades ago. Their emissions they produce aren't the real problem, it's the poor gas mileage they have. I know, I've worked on them and had to run the emission tests on them as well.

It just scares me. Even if global warming is just a "myth" i don't understand why people wouldn't want to make the world a cleaner place for future generations.

It just scares me.

I am sorry that you are afraid!!!:grouphug:

This is why I have a problem with lying and political fear-mongering that makes innocent people feel responsible for something that they personally did not cause.

Is our Earth warming... Yes, probably so. And, in fact, it has been since the Ice Age.

Is this the immediate end of the world. No, probably not.

Well, the EPA has been taking down statistics long before Bush ever got into office, so I'd be more inclined to believe them.

:thumbsup2 Thank you!

I also have a problem with actors like Leo Decrappio going on Oprah like he did earlier in the year and preach about Global warming. Then after the show he takes a limo to the airport and goes back to California in a private jet. The fuel a private jet uses borders on obscene and is a complete waste.

I live next to a small airport that is only 45 miles from Chicago and is home to many corporate and private jets. Oprah and her entourage has flown out of there many times, yet she just had a special on Global warming with Al Gore a few weeks ago. I don't care for the hypocrisy or the "Do as I say, not as I do" routine. Driving a hybrid for photo ops doesn't make you friend of the environment and a expert on speaking about Global warming.
