Hi all...the OP here just letting everyone know how much I appreciate the response! A couple of days ago, I almost "scrapped" this idea due to lack of participation. Now, here I am a few days later, amazed at how many complete strangers have stepped up to help another complete stranger. It may sound silly, but I am so touched. (It seems to me that perhaps there is a moral lesson within this geography lesson.)

To let you know what you are helping us with...let me tell you a bit about my class. Many of my students are very low income. I have 2 with very serious medical issues. These children are not children who get to experience many other areas of their country, much less their world. This activity will be more meaningful to this group of students than any other group I have had in the past, and it would not have been possible without your help! So, thank you so very much.

Having said that, I am trying to keep all the screen names, PMs, emails, and "real names" straight...so if I haven't replied, I assure you, I meant to. Feel free to shoot me another PM to let me know that you are interested in helping if I have somehow missed you.

I promise that as we begin getting these postcards, I will take pictures of our huge Postcard and World Map Display so you all can see how much your contribution has meant to our class and what we have learned from you!

BTW-I taught 4th grade in MI for ten years, I understand how upsetting it can be when you have a favorite activity that you do every year and then you get that one class where you can't get anyone to volunteer. (And trust me...it has happened...one year no volunteers for parties, project help, field trip chaperones . The best though, the parent who said I can't believe no one is volunteering to help in the classroom who didn't volunteer either(and she had in the past with her older child). )

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to update all of you and once again thank those wonderful DISers who have already contributed to our project! The kids ask me everyday if we have any mail and on most days, I can answer with a "YES". They love hearing from you!

For those of you who have helped, let me tell you what you have been a part of. Not only is this fun for the kids, but it is very educational. When we get new mail, the students practice reading for information, do additional research on the area (internet), identify the climate, landforms, and natural resources of the area, compare and contrast, and write an informational paragraph about the area! We are also developing our map skills and increasing our knowledge about other cultures and different parts of our world.

It has been very rewarding as a teacher to be part of this, and I thank you all. As soon as I upload my pics to photobucket, I will post a picture of what we've been up to.
