Ok, I'm determined to get my family to DW...I'm looking into renting points from a DVC member. But I need to understand how the process works. I contacted someone through ebay that had an auction for a studio room at okw. I contacted him about the particular dates that I had in mind to find out if those were available and he said no that the only place available during that time was a one bedroom at ss at a much higher price than the auction was listed. Could this be correct? My dates are 2/18-2/22.

Very possible, since that is over the president's Day holiday. Adjusting your dates to a little earlier or later could make a lot of difference.

I didn't even realize that when I chose the dates. I guess I need to invest in a 2007 calendar instead of using the small calendar months at the end of the 2006 calendar. I will adjust my days. We're pretty flexible, as my boys aren't in school yet and I'm a stay-at-home mom & my husband's has plenty of vacation time saved up. I appreciate your help!

Also, with DVC, Friday and Saturday nights are usually about double the number of points as Sunday-Thursday. If you have the flexibility to adjust dates for weeknights, you'll save a lot of money.

If it has to be Fri-Sat, you may come out better paying cash to Disney, rather than renting points.

I was hoping to choose a time that was a Sun-Thurs to avoid the pricier weekend rates. Now is the typical renting price $10 per point? Because I had figured for OKW studio Sun-Thurs = 55 points which would be $550. Is this correct? Are there extra fees or does it depend on each individual who is selling them? We really could go anytime beginning in February. I thought we could possibly try to avoid the spring break rush.

Rental prices here on the DIS generally run $10-12 per point. On eBay, they will run somewhat higher usually.

There should be no additional charges, because the DVC owner is not paying anything additional. If you pay by PayPal or some similar service, there might be a small cost of doing that. Some owners only accept PayPal; others don't use it. All of those arrangements are between you and the owner you rent from.

I would personally avoid eBay rentals, because Disney is in the process of cracking down on large commercial DVC rental operations and that could cause you some difficulty.

Go to the DIS DVC Rent/Trade Board and read the FAQ about rental transactions carefully. It is full of good info and will give you a good understanding of the rental process.

The price per point is negotiable and depends on the owner. $10 sounds low to me - I think $11 - $15 is a more common range. There are no extra fees, taxes to pay. If you want to get the Dining Plan or use Magical Express, be sure to let the owner know. The DP has to be on your reservation before you arrive, but you would pay for it in full at check in.

Best wishes -

Thanks so much for your help!! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions!

Also, be very careful of 7 day DVC rentals on E-bay - there have been quite a few people on E-bay renting out Interval International exchanges (some of them seem to be running businesses renting DVC and Marriott desposits). It's against Interval International's rules to rent out an exchange week. I'd be especially very, very leery of those 7 day DVC E-bay rentals that are listed cheap. It would be my guess that if Interval or maybe even Disney caught someone doing that (especially a commercial renter trying to take advantage of Interval's deposited weeks) that they would be in big trouble. Sometimes when I see them, they only stay up for a day or so. Makes me wonder if Interval has staff watching E-bay for that sort of stuff and shuts it down.

Yes, be careful when dealing with ebay. You will probably find the dates you need for a more reasonable cost by using the DVC Rent/Trade Board right here on the DIS. Just read the posting guidelines and start a thread indicating what you are looking for. It's really very simple and you might actually get to help someone out that has points they can't use vs. someone that's renting thru auctions like ebay on a commercial basis. Renting points truly can be a win/win situation with the right parties involved. Good luck! :goodvibes

I think I will stay away from Ebay and stick to the disboards. I'm a lot more trusting of this site. Everyone has been so helpful with all of my questions. I feel much safer dealing with people who know the ins and outs of Disney World and are willing to help those who are "earning their ears". Thanks so much for your help! :thumbsup2
