Please help me think through transfer strategy (UY etc.)

I'm planning a trip with extended family for June 2021. The borrowing restrictions mean that we will have to get some extra points, so I'm going to be looking for a transfer. We want to stay at a resort other than our home resort, so I'd want to buy there for the 11 month booking advantage.

First question: Use year. We own an August use year at BRV. In the past I've tried to keep transfers in my same UY for ease. But I'm getting myself confused this time around what would be best, and also am feeling worried about future closures; I don't want to pay to transfer points that end up expiring on me.

For a June 2021 trip, I figure I'm looking for any BC points prior to an April 2021 UY. Obviously the farther back I go in time, the less future chance I'd have to use them...so what should I be looking for? Points from say April 2020-April 2021? What is my best move?

Second question: I will be booking 2 different rooms. I figure I'd try to get enough transfer points to book the first 2 nights of the stay in both rooms. Then, when I hit the 7 month mark for the first day of the reservation, I'd call DVC and extend the stay with my BRV points. This sounds feasible, right?

Thanks in advance! I don't know why I'm getting so muddled on this. I think there are just so many things up in the air right now that it's disorienting.

For a trip in June 2021, you could use a transfer from any Use Year starting with June, 2020 (which would need to be banked after the transfer to use for a 2021 trip). This would include Jun, Aug, Sep, Oct, and Dec (2020), plus Feb, Mar, Apr, and June, 2021.

Transferred points may be banked to extend their use for an additional year. They will also maintain their original Home Resort and UY Month status. They may be used at the original Home Resort up to 11 months ahead and at any DVC Resort within 7 months.

I hope this helps. :)

Thanks, Doc! What UY do you think would be most advantageous? I guess just the later, the better, to extend their future life?

If your trip is not until June, 2021 the later the better IMO. Again, you can always bank the transferred points to gain an additional year to use them.

Having a few extra points to use is not a bad deal anyway! :)

Make sure your extended family is aware of the issues you have with points and reserving a villa (or multiple villas). There have been many owners who planned a big trip using banked, current and borrowed points for the big family trip. But when the date got closer, families started dropping out because of various excuses. Make sure they know about the price of park admission, that they understand the cost of transportation. You might be providing the lodging, but will you provide park admission and transportation? How about dining and food? It's so easy to drop a plan if you don't have any skin in the game.

I hope your big trip works out well for you.

Hi Deb,

That is such good advice. Thank you!

We have done this once before successfully with the same crew, and this is a birthday celebration for three cousins who are turning 8, 10 and 10. So I am confident that everyone knows the parameters and won't back out and let the kids down...but with that said, obviously there are so many things up in the air here as far as the virus. Who knows what the heck the situation will be a year from now, but my fingers are crossed that we can do SOMETHING! Honestly even if we just went into the parks a little in the morning and hung out at Beach Club for the rest of the day, or went boating on the lake, or whatever...we will be happy. :)

For us, I coordinate the room, but everyone is responsible for their own dining, tickets, and transportation. No way could I take all of that on!

Thank you again!
