Here's my story. I am 44 years old with two children, 3 and 6 years old. All my life I was sickly and underweight so I never had to count calories ,just had to stay away from a lot of foods because of stomach problem. After I had my second child I notice a big change in my body. First, I don't have stomach problems anymore so I can eat almost anything now. Secondly my metabolism has slowed down a lot. I now have a problem with sugar(couldn't eat it before) I'm like a kid in a candy store! I can eat cookies, cake and candy all day long. It's worse when I stressed. Yesterday I bought a box of cookies. There was 12 in a box, 67 calories each. I just finished the box. I ate over 700 calories in one day! I belong to a gym and go regularly but I'm starting to get discouraged. I will sweat my butt off for an hour come home and eat junk! I need to lose about 20 pounds and I don't know where to begin since i have never dieted before. I hate the way I look, especially my stomach(rolls). I still look pregnant. I am looking forward to our disney trip this August but hate the idea of getting into a bathing suit! I really need some advice. I don't know where to start. Don't know anything about portion control or counting calories.

I hope you didn't really mean that eating over 700 calories per day was a problem!

I didn't mean I ate only 700 calories for the day. If I did I wouldn't need to lose any weight. What I meant was I ate 700 calories in cookies, just cookies. Not including whatever else I ate for the day.

Make sure you have taken your measurements. If you are doing weight training and cardio you may see the lose in inches before you see it in pounds.

If you can't stay away from the food then get it out of your house. For me this is difficult because DH is a junk food junkie and is thin. I have learned to live with it by counting my calories and only having the treats when I have enough calories left. I don't count exercise calories, those calories are my losing the weight calories.

Realize that you have to cut or burn off 3500 calories a week, more than your body needs. So if you body needs 1500 calories a week to maintain your current weight you need to make sure you either cut calories or exercise to cut out those 3500 calories to lose that pound.

I looked at sparkpeople.com today. If I wasn't already doing a site for my work I believe I would be active on this site. Take a look, it is very helpful.

You can do this.

unfortunately you had your children later in life and women's metabolisms see to slow to a crawl after 40. So its going to be hard to get that metabolism kicked up. Try to have healthy snacks available in the house. Don't buy junk if it will cause you to binge. I ate a couple of boxes of girl scout cookies awhile back. I have lost 30# this year but have tons more to lose and seem to have stalled. Easter has been hard on me. I want to lose 50+ pounds by Sept disney trip. It is really probably not going to happen but I'll keep plugging away and be happy for what ever weight I lose. Good luck.

Thank you for your replies. I joined sparkspeople and started dieting today. Hopefully I will be able to stay away from sugar(my downfall). The first day is always the hardest. I am drinking a lot of water and constantly going to the bathroom. This is going to be really hard but I know it's worth it. I hope I can do it!
