OKay so I'm at school and I get the newest trojan that is out through the internet. Okay so first off I'm officially freaking out cause it's not protecting my computer from it. I have the internet as required but I'm seriously like panicinig here this has everything I need for school on the computer and it won't go away and I can't afford to have my computer help. PLease please help me. I keep keeping update virus definitions then failed. I have everything updated but this is freaking me out so bad.

Which virus is it? If you give us the name of the virus, what operating system (Windows XP Home?) and what anti-virus software you use, someone here can look up the steps you need to take to remove it. (I know sometimes the viruses make it nearly impossible to do that yourself.)

Can you try posting this on the tech board?

I have Windows XP, and it's Trojan.Peacomm virus. I followed the instructions on norton's website and it's not working and the full virus scan takes longer than an hour and I'm just in panic mode.

I can try to post this in the tech board, I just need this fixed cause I have no computer if I don't.

I think its a norton issue-we are having the same issue.

I'm getting the message on my computer that it's not protected against that virus, when I try to protect and update definitions it says failed, so I assumed it was a problem with Norton and will try and update later.

From symantec it tells people who have the peacomm to do the following

First you should disable your system restore. Here's how

1. Click on start
2. Right click on My Computer and then click properties
3. You should see a tab that says system restore. Click on that and make sure that the system restore is off...if not turn it off.
4. Click Apply
5. When the confirmation message comes up click yes
6. Click OK

Next step you need to update your virus definitions from Norton.

Once you do that do a full system scan

Then you will need to delete the registry key. This can be scary to do and it is suggested that you make a back up of your registry. To do this you can get instructions from here

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/199762382617?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Once you get that done *if you want to do it* then

Click on Start and Run
Type in regedit and click ok

When you get there you need to find a sub key that says

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Once you are in there you need to look for the System folder and click that
Then you need to find the folder that says CurrentControlSet
Open that folder and look for another one that says Services
Open Services and look for a folder named wincom32

When you found that highlight it and delete ONLY THAT ONE! Only wincom32 nothing else or you will mess up your computer badly.

Once it's deleted click out of the registry editor

Then make sure you go turn on the system restore doing the exact opposite of turning it off.

That should take care of it for you!

Here is the link from symantec in case I wasn't too clear or you need more help.

If you can't see the wincom32 then chances are you don't have the virus. Hope this helps. DH is a computer guy for a company and he gave me the symantec link to have you try.

Good luck! I hope you can get it fixed quick! I hate those stupid virus things! They are such a pain!

Did you delete the registry key from the registry? That is a good way to get rid of it for good.

Mandy - My computer started with this message this morning too. I too have everything up to date but it keeps failing when I try to update the virus definitions. I have an e-mail in to Symantec about this issue. My subscription doesn't expire until 3/13/2007 so I don't know what the problem is. I use my computer for work. I work at home doing medical transcription so I hear ya on the freaking out part. I tried to do the chat with a tech person but I couldn't get in there. If I hear anything back on my e-mail I'll post it.

ETA: I checked the registry and there is no wincomm32 there so I am hoping this is a problem with Norton's since I don't seem to have the virus.

I'm having the same problem. I run the live update and it says it didn't clear the problem. Please let us know if you hear from Norton.

Yeah we are having the same exact problem here too.

Based on what has been going on with everybody and this Norton issue unless you have found absolute proof you have the virus I don't think you have it. DId you just get a notice from Norton that you were not protected or did you get a message saying you have been infected? Since you were trying to update and you are getting t he same message as all of us I would assume that it is the latter and Norton was just telling you it was out there not that you had it.

I checked the registry and I don't have it. I'm still a bit unnerved and will complain if this is a fault and will never renew with this company again. I have so much on this computer I can't afford to lose but please let us know about the email.

I had same problem and went to check the registry and not found anything. So I think it was a glitch on there part. I do have AVG Free Edtion to as back up Anti-virus program. But it's turning to a paid program so i willhave drop it. My computer is fine now.

I finally fix Windows Defender today because it would not start. I just love googled. :lol

just bumping to see if anyone else is having these problems. I'm running an AVG virus scan and seeing what happens.

download.com has AVG free edition for those who are having this problem. My sister has norton and isn't having this problem with the newest edition.

Interesting thread. I got a Norton message that I AM protected against the trojan.peacomm virus. Maybe it has something to do with the Norton version you are running?

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2006 with my subscription due in May 2007.
