Please Help!! How do I get the braids out?

DD 9 got her hair braided on the Wonder during our 8/7 thru 8/11 cruise. She wanted them to stay in for the first two days of school. Well, tonight they need to come out and I'm not sure how to go about it.

Any advise on how to get them out without dd going bald. BTW, it's only half head of braids with two long braids on each side.

Cut the rubberbands out and work in some conditioner while you gently unbraid the hair. Unfortunately there will be some damage to her hair, but nothing too severe. Good luck and patience!!

It'll help if you buy a 'detangler' comb (any store will have them, we bought one at Wal-Mart) and spray-on conditioner. This IS a time-consuming task, but if you prepare yourself and DD, it won't be quite so bad. We watched a movie while I was spraying and combing.

As the other poster said, cut out the rubber bands. (I did one braid at a time.) Then start unbraiding from the bottom up, gently combing as you go along. You'll hear a few 'owwww's, but both of you will feel relief with each braid undone. I dreaded this, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. In fact, we had it done again on the next cruise. (But not after that, LOL!)

Also be prepared for quite a bit of hair to come out, this surprised me. Besides being pulled a bit by the braids, all the hair that normally falls out every day is still braided in there.

I read a tip on this board that worked great for DD.

Soak her hair in conditioner. Pour it on her head, and let it soak in. It's better if you have the cheap kind - like Suave, or something like that.

Wait 15 minutes or so, then the braids will literally slide right out in your hands. Plus, her hair will feel great when you're done!

Patience and a toothpick. I found it easier and less damaging to my DD's hair if I started at the bottom of the braid and inserted a toothpick in between each braid going up an inch at a time. Pulling down on the toothpick easily split the sections of the braid. I took a while but went faster than any other way that I tried and we had very little hair loss in the end.

When my daughters took out their braids, it was just washed so I cut out the rubber bands and slowly undid the braids. Their hair was all wavy and I let them wear it like that before we washed it. I used a lot of conditioner when we washed it.

Nina, how did it go? How is your DD hair now?
I took out the braids on my DD 10 about two days ago. She and her friend got their hair braided while we were on the Magic from Aug 6-13. I cut the rubber band and slowly took out my DD braids. I combed her hair very carefully. I was surprised to see lots of hair coming out! My dear friend had warned me that her DD 9 had chunks of hair coming out when she took out her braids. Afterwards, my DD washed her hair and used lots of conditioner. I was relieved to get those braids out! Now, no more pulling hair back in tight styles. Jinny

Thanks for all the tips. I took the braids out last night and used every tip offered here. It took about 45 minutes to get them out. DD lost alot of hair. I could have made a wig out of what came out of her head!!!

She said it felt good to have them out, but she would miss them. Insists she will do it again the next time we cruise. I'm not so sure about that. We saved all the beads.
