We just got back from flying Airtran.

We didn't pay to choose seats together. Airtran did not assign us seats right next to each other, but they didn't spread us out all over the plane either. They put us in the front of the plane (which was never available for us to choose when paying for seats anyway). The five of us were placed in two rows right back to back, the middle seats in both rows/both sides plus one aisle seat. We could see each other and pass snacks across the laps of strangers if needed.

I checked in at the 24 hour mark but left the seats alone on our first flight b/c we needed to get off the plane in a hurry to catch a connecting flight and I liked the idea of being in the front of the plane.

For the remaining flight and the ones home, I changed our seats so we were next to each other. There were plenty to choose from in the back of the plane. It seemed like Airtran was trying to fill up the front of the plan with seat assignments leaving the back of the flight open for last minute bookings. I had plenty of seats to choose from at the 24 hour mark (at least 15 on each flight) but all my flights were booked solid when I actually flew.

After this experience, I probably won't ever pay to choose seats on Airtran.

We also didn't pay any luggage fees. Each of us brought one carry on and one personal item. Worked out just fine.

I wasn't able to use the coupons since we are traveling Dec 23-29, but i still saved alot just from using airtran.
