Please explain walking like I am 5 years old

Having been DVC since 1996, I admit I never even heard of 'walking' until a few years ago reading these forums. And while I know it's not 'wrong', 'illegal', 'immoral' etc, it just feels skeezy to me, so I've never done it and can't imagine I ever will. I'm the weirdo for feeling that way I'm sure, but I can't help it. I also feel the same way about booking multiple dinner reservations for the same time the moment the window opens, then just canceling them and keeping the one you want. Or grabbing reservations for every night available for something hard to get, and then keeping one and canceling the rest later. These are all traditions common on the forums, but I can't bring myself to do it.
It’s COMPLETELY different. I am taking up a reservation for one extra night 11m out…. that’s very different from blocking off dining reservations within 60 days of trip.

Ok little 5 year old 😂..it’s all about availability like any reservation we make. 5am eastern you attempt a booking. Walking is when you make the reservation days prior then modify it until you “walked” to your dates.

Getting it the first time is just like all the rest, but once locked in, modifying is done at time convenient, during the day, for you, as long as modify it before the check out date. You can’t be jumped over by any other member, once you lock in the dates. As long as it’s an 11 month resort priority booking.

Another way to think about it - maybe to help you understand how walking works to guarantee your room...
Once you have secured any reservation at 11 months, nobody can book that same room until exactly 11 months prior to your declared checkout day. As long as you keep shifting ("walking") your checkout date before 11 months from that date, nobody can book it away from you (except for the fixed week exception mentioned earlier.)
For a 4-night stay, modify the reservation every three days - nothing to gain by doing it more frequently.
(just like Wedgeout said too... :-))

I would think the closer I get to my dates- if I am not diligent at 8 am eastern to modify..someone who has a longer reservation could get my room?

I think someone said earlier they had to change room view because they skipped a day or two of walking or was late signing on

You kind of have to, no?!!

It depends on how important that specific room and view type is.

We did it once, maybe twice…for RIv RV in early December and gotta say, it was t worth it.

I just go in now and book PV and then use waitlist and stalking to get it switched.

It is allowed. DVC has stated they have no interest in prohibiting the practice. They created the situation.

So, for those who have in demand times, I say go ahead.

Personally, we stay in an off-peak time (season 3 in Spring/Summer), a time that Disney is desperate for guests, so I haven't walked...

But if I moved to Season 2 or 3 Winter - you can bet I would walk if I could!

Once have the room in the system, they can’t. Think of it as you are in it. Nobody can jump over you since they have to make a continuous reservation. You are a blocker. That’s what walking is all about.

The hard part is getting something booked. Again all about availability and speed.

The room can be taken out of service. That could block your walk, but not another member booking at the 11 months.

Just to be accurate…for those new…what the board said was that they would be open to changing booking rules if they could find a better way but would be very cautious of unintentional consequences that might result.

To date, they have not come up with ones that they see as better than what we have today.

And, yes, walking was created when they moved booking windows to check in plus 7…but it was to fix the big problem of owners having to call day by day to book when it was check out.

And they did recently state that limiting owners need to call was still a goal.

Yes at akv they said that they've hired people that are actively working on the the issue and technology that will detect and stop it so it seems like they are working towards a solution, but isnt prohibited to date
