Please expalin WWoHP wands

We are going to IOA for WWoHP early next month. DD & I have read all of the books and are huge HP fans. DS has seen all the movies and is one the 2nd book. This to say that I understand the role of wands in the stories - how the wand choses its wizard, the uniqueness of the wood and the wand core.

What I want to know is what makes the wands you buy at WWoHP so special? Are you just paying $40 for a useless stick of wood? My son said he thought you could use your wand to make things "happen" in that section of the park, much the way MagiQuest works. I haven't read anything like that, but it's a cool idea. I'm just wondering if it's just something cool to buy when you're "in the moment" but is dull and worthless when you get it home.

The wand doesnt do anything "magic". It's a collectors piece pretty much. So no, it doesnt react to anything like MagiQuest wands. Im an adult fan, with an exstensive Potter collection so for me, the wand was a must have due to the look of them and the dusty Ollivanders box. It's value as a toy though, Im not sure. It depends on the kid, if they are into playing wizard's duel or any of that. But the wands are really just beautifully crafted collectors pieces. No light up tips or special effects.

Thanks for your quick reply! As far as buying one myself, I guess I'll just have to wait until I see them in person. My kids, ages 9 & 12, are mostly beyond role playing. They both had Griffindor robes and the plastic wands for Halloween several years back. Our trip is partly for my son's birthday - his birthday is today, but we don't have break until early Oct. We'll let him pick something to buy, so we'll just see what catches his eye.

My understanding is they are not even wood, correct? But are resin.

I think the hefty price is because they are more finely crafted, real looking than the plastic ones you buy with a halloween costume. Plus they come in the box off the shelf that looks like the movie set.

My question is: does anyone know the birthday wand chart? I'd like to know what DD's birthday wand is so I can show her online and get her thinking. Otherwise we may spend hours picking out a wand. Her birthday is January.

I may end up buying one of the birthday wands after seeing this chart. My son's birthday is today, September 10th, which is a "Vine" wand. Our last name is Vines. Too funny!

My 13 year old daughter who has seen the movies, but hasn't read the books... LOVED Snapes wand.. she took it to school when we got home and her friends LOVED it!! My 18 year old would have let it go had I not surprised him with one, just because he and I started the whole Harry Potter thing together. We read all the books/saw all the movies... he "mentioned" that Sirius' wand was awesome, so I snuck and bought it for him. He took it back to his college dorm and had a blast showing it off! hahaha Go figure.. it is all about who is purchasing. My kids love HP.. so the wands are special, like nothing else.

Just remember, it makes no sense to buy the elder wand, it won't work for you. It only works if you murder someone and take theirs!

You don't have to murder them, just beat them in battle. Draco didn't murder Dumbledore and Harry didn't murder Draco but that is the succession of the wand in the book.

Hmmm... that's not my take having just re-read book 7. Sure, the wand would work, it seemed everyone used everyone else's wand in book 7. But it wouldn't work like the Elder wand should work. Reference - he-who-must-not-be-named vs. Snape.

That's because Snape wasn't he one who "took" the wand. When Draco disarmed Dumbledore at the end of the 6th book, ownership of the elder wand went to him. In the 7th book Harry disarms Draco so all wands that are owned by Draco, including the elder wand, transferred to Harry.

Harry explains it all to Voldemort in the last chapter right before he finally defeats him. Pages 594-595 in the UK paperback.

It worked for Harry because Harry defeated Voldemort w/Malfoy's wand.

Harry stole Malfoy's wand, which had disarmed/defeated Dumbledore (by supreme luck mind you). Dumbledore could not be defeated by Voldemort because Dumbledore's wand was the acting Elder Wand.

Voldemort thought since Snape "killed" Dumbledore, that Snape's wand was now the Elder wand. He did not realize that you do not have to kill the previous owner.

Aside from the confusing fight scene, Harry used the Elder Wand to fix his old wand, so we know the Elder Wand worked for him.
