What are they for? Where do I get them? How do you use them? DS asked for one for a Christmas present (due to his job, being gone til January 18, that's when we're celebrating). I'm thinking they might be gift cards for downloading songs onto his Ipod from a specific site. Is that right? How much does it cost to download songs? I'm trying to judge how much to give him. Will he have any trouble using it? He's working on a cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean, so he can't call anywhere or get mail if that's involved. However, he does have (slow) internet access. Do I have the use right? How much would you think would be a good cost? Any hidden fees?

iTunes card are gift cards that can be redeemed on iTunes to download songs and videos. The price to download a song used to be $0.99 but they changed that last year and the price varies. I believe the highest price for a song now is $1.29. Anyway, the cards are purchased in preset amounts, usually $25 and $50- I think I have seen some higher. You can get them just about anywhere. WalMart, Target, most grocery stores. Walmart and Target usually have them at the check outs hanging up. You can usually find them too in the electronics depts. In the grocery stores they are with all the other gift cards.

The full amount of the gift card is added to the iTunes account and then any purchases are deducted from the amount of money in the account.

The iTunes cards make great gifts. My daughter and I are always happy to get them (we share an iTunes library). I've seen $10 denominations if you just want a small gift, and up to $50 if you want to spend more.

You just log into your iTunes account, enter the card number, and the funds are credited to your account. Then you can choose whatever music you want. You do need an internet connection, at least with what my daughter calls "Mom's ancient shuffle". I think with an iTouch you download direct to the device but you should still back it up to a computer using the iTunes software.

itunes cards are such great gifts because of how easy they work. Your son will scratch off the code on the back of the card and enter it on his iTunes account once (this is done online). Then he never has to keep track of the card again. When he wants a new song, or audio book, or movie, or tv episode, or app (if he has an iTouch or iPhone), he just clicks on the "buy" button and it becomes his. The price is deducted from his balance, rather than charged to the credit card he associated with the account when he set it up. As long as there is a positive balance in your iTunes account, it draws on that rather than billing your card.

I love to receive iTunes gift cards b/c it's so great to get something off iTunes and never be billed, and not have to weigh if it's "worth" the price. Plus, a $40 credit goes a long way on iTunes. It's a gift that gives for weeks or months.

So send him as big a card as you feel comfortable gifting, and know he will be mentally thanking you every time he logs on, for a long time.:)

Everyone else answered your other questions so I will address this - my guess is if he knows to ask for it he knows if it will work. I suspect others working with him have used them and he knows it will work.

It depends on what type of ipod he has. If he has one that he uses to watch videos, or movies (pretty much any one but the shuffle) they will cost more than music. I know alot of movies go up to $10 but maybe some cost more :confused3 There are no hidden fees, the cost of what you purchase is the only thing deducted from the balance of your account (funded by the card).

I have seen them at CVS, ToysRUs, the grocery stores, Best Buy.

I have seen them in $10, 15, 25 and 50 denominations.

I just bought one for dd13 at Walmart. The $15 card was the cheapest. They did sell $10 cards in paks of 3 ($30) and up, $25, $50.

If you have a Sam's Club membership they sell them in packs, and they are a few dollars cheaper. Not sure the exact amounts but I'm thinking it was $30 worth of cards for around $28.
