Please don't do this..

Maybe the woman had to really scrape that ten bucks together; from the sofa cushions or the family change jar.

I know there have been times in my life when ten bucks made a difference in my week!

I very seldom keep cash in the house- use my debit card for everything. When my son needed $3 for a school planner, the teacher got two singles and four quarters, because that's all the cash I had on hand. Better change than not getting paid at all.

Yep! at least she joined .....now get her to volunteer.... LOL
(and if you seem ungrateful or negative that will be even more difficult!!)

Our PTA hasn't accepted checks in years. I see nothing wrong with sending in coins.:confused3 It sounds like that was all she had. It may be an inconvenience for the treasurer, but at least the parent is involved in the school. I would focus on the latter.

Once at Burger King my mom was counting coins out and the manager got nasty with her, and leaned out of the drive through window and said "Sorry this customer is taking so long!" (she was not paying for the ENTIRE order with coins, just $1 or $2). Ooooo she was ticked.
I always tell my kids coins spend like any other currency, and I guess your PTO member believed it! I know I had a couple of times people paid for girl scout cookies with quarters too.

Actually, this particular lady does volunteer at PTO fundraisers, as do many of the Moms in our community (small town, small school, great supportive community). I'm not angry with the lady, I'm sure she didn't even think about it, just thought I'd let others here know that it is slightly annoying.

When my kids were in middle school I was PTO president and did the fund raiser. I would prefer coins to the rubber checks we got. One mom wrote separate checks for each order the child sold instead of one big check. She wrote us 25 checks, and they all bounced. She must have had a huge penalty at her bank.

:scared1: We don't do too bad with INS checks.... about 4 in the last year. We do ask the folks to cover the $10 fee charged by our bank if the check is returned due to their error. If we hold the check for quite a while and they close the account or something, then we eat the fee.

I have never thought that paying with coins would make things difficult. Maybe that is the cashier in me. I will pay with coins if I have it, rather than writing a check.

Question: Why do people have to pay fees to join the PTA? I have 2 DDs and have paid to join but never understand why? I am not able to attend meetings due to my schedule, but have volunteered.

OMG! Ethan's Mom are you in NJ? Because I think you are my school's PTO treasurer!(Can't remember if you daughter is named molly but I think she is) And if you are I need to watch what I say here!!LOL(Is Ethan in 5th?)

JUST use it for the vending machines and mark it off as a business expence for a meeting.

Oh and I always have about $40 in coins in my Company van and another $20 in my cars for the parking meters here in the city. If I'm in a pinch and need to send money in I just get it out of the cars.

Nope, I'm in CT. Ethan is in 1st Grade and Molly just started preschool.

Feel free to say anything you want. Everyone here in our town talks about everyone else, anyway. :rotfl2:

I'm not positive, but I think it's probably part of the charter for the PTO. They have to have a way to distinguish members of the PTO from all of the other regular Joes who have kids in the school. A relatively inexpensive fee is a good way to delineate who is interested in being involved (even in a minor way) with the PTO and who is not.

Another one to say coins are a pain in that setting.
I was "Cookie Mom" for DD GS troop and coins were a nightmare.
You are not alone!

I have sent in c0ins f0r 0ther things because if I did'nt d0 it at that m0ment than I might just f0rget all t0gether....Men0pause ya kn0w:rotfl2:

I'm sure it's different all over, but for us the dues are part of our fundraising efforts.

I am lol because out new treasurer is has a son named Ethan. And we are $10 and get the directories! It all sounded so similar!:rotfl2: Well glad I can freely speak about everything.

our kids schools stopped accepting checks a couple of years ago. I have to say its really a pain because I don't keep much cash around the house and if I have any its usually a $20 I got at the ATM. I know I have had to send in change just because I don't have any small bills.

We accept checks and even have a credit card machine that we use for our big fundraiser. Like I said, if it's the last day or two to pay something, I can see using change. But when you've got weeks before it's due?

I totally know where you're coming from, OP! Every year I collect money for the Weekly Reader and field trips. Inevitably, someone pays the fees in quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies. I suppose it's better than nothing, though. It's what I deserve (I suppose) b/c I won't accept checks since I'm soooo not paying the fees if those checks bounce!!

20 people that work for me have an entire source of income in the form of coin collections out of newspaper boxes. If nobody wants to accept coins, how are my contractors going to be able to spend their income? That's all I have with me most of the time, it all spends the same.
