I'm the PTO Treasurer this year. To be a voting member of the PTO, you have to pay $10 in membership dues. These dues aren't required at any particular time. We've already had our first PTO meeting and the next one is 3 weeks away. Yet, I had one woman who sent in her membership dues (sent in her child's backpack to school and then through the school mail system to me) in the form of a $5 bill, three $1 bills, a $1 coin and ten dimes.

If this is something you would consider doing, please wait to submit your membership dues until you have two more $1 bills. It's hard enough keeping track of all of the checks and cash without having to deal with coins.

To me as long as they are joining the PTA and paying the dues, I wouldn't worry about the form it comes in. I'm Treasurer of our church and certainly don't begrudge the form the money comes in. I just appreciate that it comes.

Maybe the woman had to really scrape that ten bucks together; from the sofa cushions or the family change jar.

I know there have been times in my life when ten bucks made a difference in my week!

I very seldom keep cash in the house- use my debit card for everything. When my son needed $3 for a school planner, the teacher got two singles and four quarters, because that's all the cash I had on hand. Better change than not getting paid at all.

I don't get it. Does the cash have to be mailed somewhere? Why is taking coins to deposit at the bank harder? If it were me, I never have cash so I would very possibly have sent in some quarters too. Maybe they are a DIS budget boarder and they use the envelope system.

OMGosh, I've paid for SOmany things using coins that its crazy! Food at McD's, coffee out, and yes, the dreaded school activity fee. I feel bad that it may have been an issue for someone - especially thinking that person wanted to do that job. Money is money to me and if I can find enough to pay for what I need, bills or coins, then GREAT!!!!

I am the Treasurer for a local civic organization, and I understand what you mean ethan'smom. Coin is a pain in the neck...it's tough to keep track of, it's apain in the neck at the bank.

Yes, it's still money, and yes it counts and yes to all those things...but when you are dealing with a lot of money for some sort of organization, coin makes the process slower.

In Canada we even have 2$ coins, we call toonies...We have VERY heavy pockets..

Honestly, I wouldn't have thought getting coins was odd if the fee was due immediately. I know that sometimes you have to scratch up whatever you've got on you. But on something that wasn't due right away, I would have written a check or waited until I had bills.

This next week, we'll be selling extra copies of our Student Directory. Every family gets one free copy, but in this small town, the Student Directory almost acts as the town phonebook, so we decided to print extra copies and charge a small fee to cover the printing. So, I know I'll be swimming in checks for $3... and probably some coins too.

We'll take the money however we can get it.

When my kids were in middle school I was PTO president and did the fund raiser. I would prefer coins to the rubber checks we got. One mom wrote separate checks for each order the child sold instead of one big check. She wrote us 25 checks, and they all bounced. She must have had a huge penalty at her bank.
