Please do NOT go to Disney World if you (or your children) are sick

You people that keep bringing up all the paranoid people living in bubbles...

GOOD GRIEF!

No one has mentioned wanting to stay home because of the sick people. There is nothing wrong with people wanting the contagious sick folks to stay home. I love how everyone turns things around. Where on earth is anyone wanting to cancel their trip because they're scared of sick folks?? We're wanting sick folks to stay home. Seems pretty darn logical to me.

Actually I'm advocating that EVERYONE stay home next week. This will allow me to suddenly get "sick" from work, and have WDW all to myself.

It seems like such common sense...You have Flu symptoms..Stay home. But apparantly, there are lots of people lacking common sense.:confused3 I don't think it helps that the CDC is changing guidelines by the second, the vaccines are in shortage, and the media thrives on fear mongering...isn't Jon and Kate doing anything these days to divert the attention?:rotfl2:

there was a post that was telling high risk individuals to be careful and quarantine yourself from public places....that is what I was addressing. And the fact that common sense has left..

I think we all just need to use some common sense..I don't know what happened to that...Seems like a lot of people have lost it. I don't think you need to quarantine yourself if you are a high risk individual...then you will never go anywhere again, become a hermit, start having conversations with your cat , dog, gerbil, etc., get really involved with reality tv out of boredom, when you have sifted through all the dance shows, survivor, etc you will turn to the Real Housewives and Real World , then your brain will melt..

What kind of life is that?

If you have the flu ..should you go to Disney..of course not. But you can't not go anywhere for "fear" that you might catch something. As many have stated..you are contagious before you even know your sick..and if you are feeling better and have no fever..what is the problem? Before the big swine flu...people went to school and work sick all the time..did you worry about infecting high risk individuals then ? Do you know how many hacking sweating individuals I have seen in the grocery stores? My point..is this is a good thing in the sense that people are being more aware of their symptoms and staying home with fevers now..the downside is..we are becoming a country of paranoid people who will be so sanitized that their bodies won't know how to fight anything off.

Maybe you don't, but it makes more sense for you to be responsible for your own exposure than to expect some stranger to be responsible for your exposure.

The simple fact about this round of the flu is that its an epidemic. At its current infection rates it doesn't matter if 100% of the people that have symptoms stay out of public - there are enough people walking around shedding the virus without symptoms that you will be exposed if you are out in public - at least in my region. If that is troublesome to you, stay home. If that isn't, go out. But don't expect other people to take responsibility for your health - because even if they do, the risk profile of catching this really isn't that much less.

I live in new jersey - northern NJ- and cannot find one blessed place that has the shot vaccine for H1N1. I think that the flu.gov site is a joke. In NJ, everywhere is TBD - to be determined - with a couple of towns tentatively scheduling clinics for November. However, because they are so few and far between, they are being inundated with requests from citizens around the state.

Also, cannot find a private ob in NJ that has requested and/or received the shot. I go to one of the larger practices in the northern part of the state and they didn't order it. Same with a lot of the pediatric practices.

I think that this is really ridiculous, considering that here is the chance to vaccinate a highly dense population (one of the most dense in the country) prior to a massive outbreak of the H1N1 flu.

And don't go to disney if you have the flu. Its contagious, no matter what you armchair doctors think and what rationalization you are using.

We live in Northern NJ...my kids are all scheduled for the vaccine next week at our pediatrician....I just made the appointments yesterday so check with your pediatrician! :)

??? I have a headache..so maybe I am just dense and not understanding..I am not expecting others to be responsible for my exposure..I am just saying common sense needs to be brought back into peoples lives...if you have 104 stay home.. Although I don't know how people walk around disney with a fever at all..I get 100 and I feel like utter crap...

Dear amanda:
Can you pm or email me with the pediatrician. I have not found one with the shot (not nasal mist) - my kids can only take the shot because I am pregnant and have not been able to get a shot myself yet.

Thanks in advance,
barb

My mom came home from work yesterday furious (she works at a well-known insurance company in their home office). She said a young guy in their group came to work yesterday sick as can be with the flu and he even admitted it. He had a fever, could barely sit up at his desk and kept having the chills. He said that his doctor told him they weren't testing for H1N1 but to assume that's what it was and to stay home from work but he is out of time off - even sick days. I guess if he had taken any more days he would have been written up.

Well, of course people are trying to stay away from him and they emailed their manager and he said he couldn't force him to go home that it was against the law. My mom said she emailed HR and they said they would 'look into it' but he was there again today (she emailed me and told me)!!!

And I'm saying "why? it doesn't lower your risk of exposure. People are shedding virus who don't have symptoms." I wouldn't go to Disney with a fever either, wouldn't be fun. Nor would I drag my kid's through the parks with a fever. But if someone else does, it really doesn't impact me because so many people are walking around with this symptomless. My chances of getting this at the mall from an asymptomatic adult is as high as getting it from a kid with a fever.

I think that if you are sick, it would be the responsible thing to stay home.

If you get sick while on vacation, make sure you alert housekeeping, so they can give the room an extra scrub down. And don't bring your germites into the parks to spread the love.

On H1N1, I would definitely get the vaccination, especially for children. Better safe than sorry.

As to Indiana Rose Lee - people like you truly amaze me. I have never experienced a tragedy even remotely close to what you suffered. It must take enormous internal strength to survive something like that. I'm sure you also have a wonderful support system at home. I don't know if people on these boards watch Biggest Loser, but one of the contestants this season is a mother who lost her husband and two children to a drunk driver that crashed into her family. I, like Jillian on the show, don't think I could recover from something like that. To see that woman take charge of her life and start letting people back into her life - it was truly amazing to watch. You're stronger than I could ever be. My condolences for your loss

Thanks wall-e. I feel very humbled by the kindness on this thread.

Re. Abby, I don't know how she went on. I have children that I have to be strong for, and far too many marriages are lost after the loss of a child, but I am so grateful to have my husband. Frankly, when I heard her story, I thought that I would just drive into the river if that happenned to me. That girl is strong. I'm just a baby who wouldn't want the rest of the family to go through another loss.

i would truly spiral into darkness. the thought haunts me, because i've already lost both parents, and i'm an only child. i can't even think about it.

my heart aches for you, rose lee. you seem so very strong, just from reading your words before knowing any of this. very inspirational.

I dread the day I lose my parents. It must be so hard to not have them around.:flower3:

There is so much confusing info. out there. A teacher at my child's school is pregnant & the school gave out seasonal flu mist to students recently & will give out the H1N1 flu mist when it comes in. We (staff/parents) were told it was safe to give to students even if teachers & moms are pregnant. Yet, I hear from some people & it seems your doctor told you, that children shouldn't get the mist if their mom is pregnant.
I hope you find the shot for yourslef & your children soon.

I also work for a "well known insurance company" and we received a memo a month or two ago saying if you are exhibiting flu symptoms you must leave the company premises immediately.

I feel really bad for the poor guy. I mean, of course if it means losing your job (?) you will show up for work even if you are at deaths door. Some companies really treat their employees like replaceable cogs. I guess in this economy they can do that -- very easy to replace employees.
:(

If my kids have the flu it typically passes in a couple days and I will be back at the Dis. As long as they are not throwing up. Sorry but I am not canceling a vacation because my kids "might" give it to someone else. All three are in school so our family is usually got some sort of illness from now until they get out next year.

The media freaks everyone out about getting sick and suddenly i have to lock myself up. Give me a break. Thousands die every year from the regular Flu. Stop being paranoid

There is a new item at the Disney gift shops this year for all you paranoid people. It is the Disney Bubble. Now you and your family can walk around in a fashionable plastic bubble all day without the worry of someone even breathing on you. On sale now.

Wow, where did you get your medical degree. There is no way I would drag my sick children around the park to harm them and infect others. I feel sorry for your kids.

Ditto Ms Mouse!

That just speaks from the 'it wont effect/hurt me' person. Yep thousands die each year but till its someone they know they dont care. Self entitlement at its finest.

Just like they mentioned a Disney Bubble there is also Karma!

You all are good folks. Thanks. I should know better than to mentally jump into a topic that can go down this road. I apologize for getting emotionally involved. I'm not really good at the thick skin needed on the internet sometimes.

To those of you who have lost, my heart felt sympathies. Whether a parent, child, sib or friend, it all hurts, and leaves some sort of scar.

sherry, best thoughts on your trip. My mom's oncologist had us wait for a trip down there, but that was her/our carrot for the end of chemo. be well.

Thanks Indiana. You and your family are in my prayers. Hope your mom finished her chemo and is well and had a great trip!!!
