Sorry for this! I'm new to knitting sweaters (this is my first) and the 40 year old pattern is NOT helping matters. My comments are in between the *** and ***, and the rest is the actual pattern. I've only put in the adjusted numbers, so if it says K2tog, K19, the pattern says K17 but in brackets for the size I'm making it's K19. Clear as mud, right?

I knit bottom up the front of the sweater, and then it says:

Divide for neck as follows:
1st row: K2tog. K19. Turn. Leave remaining stitches on spare needle.
***I started with 75 stitches. I believe I should now have 20 stitches on the main needle, and 54 on the spare.***
2nd row: Sl 1P. Purl to end of row.
***If I'm reading this correctly, I should still have 20 stitches. I assume I turn here, even though it doesn't specify.***
3rd row: K2tog. K16. Turn.
***Wait. That leaves me with 3 extra stitches. Is this a problem with the pattern, or am I missing something?***

4th row: Sl 1P. Purl to end of row.
5th row: K2tog. K13. Turn.
6th row: Sl 1P. Purl to end of row.

Continue in this manner, that is, decreasing 1 st at beginning of next, then every alternate row, at the same time working 2sts less on turning rows until the row "K2tog. K1. Turn" has been worked
Next row: P2. Break yarn.

On row 3 where you have K16- is that the adjusted number for your sizing? Does the original pattern have 13 here?

I wonder if something is missing from the instructions. Maybe it is slip 1, purl 1, PSSO (pass slipped stich over). That way you would be decreasing on each side but that would still only decrease by 2 stitches per row, not 3.

The end of the directions you quoted specifically say you’ll be working fewer stitches every row. I’d trust the pattern and knit it as directed. I, personally, also wouldn’t bother putting the other stitches on a holder I’d just knit the stitches as instructed and leave the rest unworked.

Also it doesn’t need to tell you to turn at the end of the purl row because you’ll have worked all the stitches - theres no other choice but to turn and knit the next row.

if you haven’t you might check out Ravelry- if you ask them over there you’ll have thousands of people to help you along!

I wondered about that too, except for this part:

It does, but if I follow the part with the row numbers it means I'd be decreasing 1 stitch every other row. The number of stitches don't work out, so I'd wind up with 3 extra at the end of every decrease row. Those are the ones I don't know what to do with. The paragraph at the bottom says " working 2sts less on turning rows". Do those just get dropped off the needle? Wouldn't things unravel that way? (I'm used to crochet, and this is very different). But even if that's the case, the numbers still aren't adding up. If I were to just slide those 2 stitches off and pretend they didn't exist then I'd still have 1 too many.

I don't even know how I'd do that and be able to turn it. I get the impression that that eventually I'm going to switch to the side that's on the holder to work that the same way. Maybe I should've taken pictures of the pattern for context.

Never heard of it, but I may need to look into it! My aunts kept telling me this would be "easy", which may be making my frustration a bit worse that it would be if I'd expected it to be difficult.

Don’t drop them off (yes they would unravel) just ignore them and pretend they aren’t there.

Don’t move the unworked stitches to a holder just knit the stated number of stitches and when you’ve completed the instructions for that row turn your work and work the other way purling back to the beginning of the row.

What you’re doing is decreasing on the armpit edge one stitch per row while leaving live stitches in the middle for the neckline. Eventually you’ll probably bind off for the top of the shoulder and the repeat the instructions on the other shoulder over the unworked stitches for that shoulder - I image you’ll eventually pick up the live neckline stitches and knit up a crew neck band of some kind.

Another vote for Ravelry -- very helpful site!

If you have a yarn store nearby, maybe stop by there to show your project and ask for help? I've received lots of help and encouragement at my local yarn shop.
