GOOD NEWS!!!!!! spoke with HeatherSue this evening, and she has the fridge in her possession. it no longer has a box, since the last person to use the fridge left perishables in it. please please please clean out the fridge and only leave stuff that will not go bad in it! the luggage services people that i talked to were not pleased about the mess. anyway, so yeah, we're up and running again! (2.5.09)


looks like the fridge may be missing...i'm doing what i can to try to locate it, i'll update whenever i know something new.

Per the advice from the DIS moderators, I'd like to set out some of the ground rules for this particular swap. If someone can think of other things we should get down in writing, please let me know!

1) First, we figure out if there are enough people to have the swap. It's looking good. I'd like to keep the cost to $10 per person, which is about a one night rental fee. So the first approx. 8 people will need to pay until the price of the fridge is covered. After that, it will be free. I won't ask anyone taking the fridge for only 1 day to kick in, since it's really to our advantage not to have the fridge in storage.

2) I'll collect money once we know it's a viable swap. In August, I'll order a new fridge to be delivered to WDW.

3) Payments are non-refundable. But, if you have to cancel and someone else takes over your dates, we can ask that person pay you. Nothing is guaranteed.

4) Whereever possible, we'll all agree to do a face-to-face transfer of the fridge, to minimize the risk of it getting lost.

5) Lots of swaps have been going on for a LONG time, and there's no reason to suppose that something will happen to this one, but if the fridge gets lost, stolen, broken, etc., we will all be out of luck. There are no provisions for refunds for any reason. I'm hoping the risk of something going wrong will be very small. I plan to contact other swap organizers to see if they can share any tips and to see how they package their fridges on the occasions where it does have to go into bell services storage for a short period of time.

After some discussion, it was decided that DISsers will be permitted to post threads on the Budget Board in regards to Refrigerator Swaps. BUT, everyone involved must be aware that the DIS, or any person involved with the DIS, shall NOT be liable for ANY problem(s) that may arise from these swaps.

Please consider this before starting a Refrigerator Swap:
Unlike the Stroller Swap where the strollers were donated and NO MONEY exchanged hands, when people are "paying" for something (even a nominal fee), they expect something in return for their money. If problems arise, they want someone held responsible, naturally that could end up being the Swap Organizer.
Unlike the sharing of Specialty Cruises where money is generally not exchanged until the time of the cruise, and if someone does not show up or the cruise is cancelled, there is no money lost, this has more of a chance for something to go "wrong." Refrigerator could be lost, stolen, broken or for whatever reason the "Swap" does not take place ie: misunderstood communications, a last minute cancelled trip, etc. - who will see that the "Swap" continues with the NEXT person on the list? Again, when money is concerned, expectations are higher, and these things should be carefully thought out.

We suggest that the “organizer” of the Swap set up rules pertaining to that particular swap and see that everyone involved be informed of the rules and agree to them before participating in the Swap. We suggest that these matters be addressed in a Refrigerator Swap Agreement:
Handling of any money involved. Will "refunds" be issued in the case of last minute trip cancellations, swap miscommunications, etc.?
What will happen if Refrigerator is lost, stolen, damaged, etc? Who will be responsible? And what does that resposibility mean? Payment for a replacement or something else?
How will an “absence” (someone not showing up to do the Swap) be handled?
What will be the “disposal” of Refrigerator at the end of the Swap.
And, any other matter that may arise with a Refrigerator Swap.

Again, the DIS will NOT be held liable for any problems pertaining to a Refrigerator Swap and can NOT be called in the case of ANY disputes regarding a Refrigerator Swap. It is up to the Swap Organizer to see that everyone involved in the Swap be aware of this fact and agree to it.

What is a refrigerator swap?
A frig swap is a group of DISers who will be staying at a value resort and would like to have a refrigerator in their room without paying $10/night for a WDW frig. A dorm-size refigerator is purchased and passed from one vacationing DISer to the next on the list.

Each swap is organized differently, so it's important to get all the details from the individual swap organizer to familiarize yourself with the rules. Information on how to pick up your frig and how to pass it to the next DISer should be provided by the swap leader.

There may or may not be a cost involved with swap participation. It is up to the individual swap leaders. NO ONE SHOULD BE MAKING A PROFIT FROM ORGANIZING A SWAP. This would be against DISboard rules. The cost of the swap (if any) should be to cover the purchase of the frig and any cleaning & maintenance supplies.

Do not start a new thread to ask if your resort/dates are available without checking for available dates in the current swaps first. If your dates are not available, feel free to start a new swap and PM me with a link to your thread.

Keep in mind that someone has to step up to the plate and be the organizer for a swap or it just isn't going to happen. If you're hesitant to be the organizer, PM one of the current organizers to get advise from them on how to run one. It might not be as complicated as you think!

With luck, everyone looking for a refrigerator swap will be able to get into one.

i'd really like to have a fridge for my family's stay at pop, and my dates aren't open in any of the current swaps. so i'm thinking of starting one myself.

just for my first check, i found one at walmart.com for about 90 bucks including shipping. i will keep looking around when i have more time. but that would mean that say the first 8 people after me would pay $10. (edit: i'm looking into a bit bigger one, the 2 something instead of the 1 something, so maybe a few more to pitch in the 10 bucks)

any interest? i guess it would help to put in my dates. aug 13-20. so i could first pass on the fridge to someone else on aug 20. this means for all of you going during free dining, here's another option, as i know those are coveted slots.

please post here if you would be interested, and willing to pay $10.

Poprivet, good point. Hopefully we can get someone to fill in this gap, so we can hand over the fridge face to face, or at least without much of a storage wait. But time is just about running out for that. Will post your personal info. on the fridge unless I hear different at the last minute.

We just got back and we Loved using the fridge!! It was no problem getting it from Luggage Services, I actually just gave the man our last name and he brought it right out. Great job putting our name and res # on all three sides. The cord was taped to it, and I am pretty the door was taped shut, (something I would suggest to future swappers, since the box is gone.)

Another satisfied customer!
