Please check yr smoke alarms

I know this is off topic, but I can't get the tragedy of Emma and Amanda's deaths out of my mind... I want to remind everyone to check their smoke alarms today in honor of their memory and please tell your friends and family to do the same.

I posted on the other post, I checked mine today and although my upstairs one had power, when I went to test it, it did not work. I could get my downstairs one to work but not the upstairs. I change the back up battery regularly, but didn't really think to verify that it does work. I'm really glad I thought to do it today, I just returned from the store where I purchased a replacement. Such a sad, sad story

We realized our computer area is somewhat isolated from our current smoke detecters, so I went out and bought an extra one today. We normally wait to check our batteries at daylight savings time changes, but wouldn't hurt to check now.

This is a very good point. I've had for weeks on my list of things to do to change all batteries in the detectors. I am going to make a point of doing this today.

Thank so much for posting this. I wanted to say something on the orignal thread, but was afraid that I'd get jumped on by the PD people for belittling the tragedy.

If you have a smoke alarm, it is a good idea to check them and change the batteries twice a year, usually when daylight savings time changes. If you don't have one, or can't afford one, many communities have programs to provide free ones.

Better yet, buy an extra smoke detector and just leave it on your computer desk, or anywhere you have a lot of electronic equipment. They're only $7 at Wal-mart.
Emma and Amanda's situation, which apparently was a very very small fire, points out how deadly smoke can be.
As my screen name indicates, I work in TV. We had a 3 alarm house fire this morning in our area on my show, destroyed two houses, and damaged a third. Everyone got out because smoke detectors woke them up.

Also folks, be sure to test your smoke detector with SMOKE, not just pressing the test button. I think a candle blown out near the smoke detector should set it off. You can check out test procedures with your local fire department or on the link posted earlier.

I know mine work, because they go off every time something burns on the stove. Never again will I let this annoy me!

Having said that, though, after I stopped crying for Lynda and her family yesterday, I immediately tested them, anyway.
