I know there must be some stampers around here!

A friend of mine is getting married and brilliant me brought up the idea of making our own placecards for dinner. I know a little bit about stamping but not a lot.

What we want to do is a business card size placecard (or slightly bigger) with a peacock feather stamp and a name underneath. I found a couple stamps for the feather, but I'm totally boggled how to do the names. I don't want to get into handwriting them because I will misspell them at the slightest distraction. I don't want Bob to become **** or Sarah to be Srah. I seem to remember seeing something, possibly with Martha Stewart that helped you line up letter and keep them square, anyone know what this is? And is there a way to put alphabet stamps together so I can stamp a whole name at once rather than letter by letter? We also were looking at using embossing powder in some kind of peacock color (in case you haven't figured it out this whole wedding is peacock themed). I've never used embossing powder before, but I do know you have to heat it. My question with it is do I stamp with ink or with those clear pads with the sticky stuff?

I'm crafty in all but the stamping and scrapbooking area. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!! TIA

I'm going to move this up to the scrapbook section because we have several stampers/card makers who can help.

For the embossing part, I prefer to use a colored ink instead of the clear pad.
Get an ink that would match the feathers, teal or a blue. Then get a nice greenish blue embossing powder.
You can use an embossing heat tool or a hair dryer, you have to be really careful that you don't burn the paper though. Practice! A little powder goes a long way.

There are singular letters for stamps but honestly I would consider printing the names off the computer, it's the best way to stay uniform.

I would buy placecards that you can print off on the computer and print the names high enough on the card that you can stamp under them.

If you already have unprintable place cards than I suggest getting a light velum that will match the color of the embossing (clear would be fine if you have a white background but doesn't go well with the ivory). And print the name on the vellum (you should be able to fit a lot on one sheet). Then cut them out and glue them onto the cards (using a xyron x would be the easiest way to do this as if the entire piece of velum has glue on it then you can't tell the glue is on it).

I'd agree with printing as Rebecca suggests. Close to my Heart does a sort of grid to help you line up letters, but some people :rolleyes1 have annoying names with several of the same letter so you have to stamp several times, and its hard getting the colour even:headache:

Its less of an issue if the feathers differ slightly across the whole set, but variation mid-word is not a good look. IMHO of course.

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure if this was "scrapbooky" enough so thanks for moving it.

Honestly when I first started thinking about this whole project I was at Joanns and had a nifty peacocky looking embossing powder in my hand and that's where the idea came from. I originally went..Ooo I can get some gelpens and write the names...well you can read my issues with that in the original post. The stamping of the names came from watching MS and seeing that gizmo and the whole "work smart not hard" thing with printing names never even occured to me. Feeling a little DUH at the moment!

Since you're from Buffalo, you have a GREAT resource right there in town in the Buffalo Stamp and scrap company - don't ask me to tell you exactly where it is because our friends took us there, but I know they have a web site.

I second the "computer print" the names - that way you can correct the spelling before printing - because it's JUST as easy to misspell names stamping as handwriting!

Good Luck!
