Hi! I have a dd who will be almost 11 months old when we leave for disney in 9 days. She is heavy, about 23 lbs. She is already walking well and hates to ride in her stroller. I was thinking of buying one of the hip hammocks to also carry her in, as an alternative to stroller / walking. Any one have any experience with these? I was wondering if it would also be helpful to hold her to me, when we got on some rides with her. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

I tried the hip hammock for WDW when my DD was 1.5 it worked okay when she was no trying to wiggle out. i do like it and think it would not hurt to try it out. See if you go try her in it at the store. Also babiesrus will take it back if it does not work out well. Hope this helps, have a great trip.

BABIES R US is my favorite place to shop for my little guy! They will even take back clothes that have been washed if you try something on that dosn't fit after the fact! I still had the tags and reciept though.

Anyhow, I would recomend buying anything you could from there, because if it dosn't work out, it can be easily returned! Not too many stores like that nowadays...

for a hip carrier that is easier to find in a store like babies r us I like the combi urban baby carrier. For winter is is nice and has a built in rain cover. Otherwise I prefer the mei hip baby carrier which is nicer in warmer weather. I find the neck to be more comfortable for long term use. It uses buckles or ties (personal preference) but you may not be able to get it in time. Both are dedicated hip carriers.

when our son was 11 months we went to MK for a day. Used a stroller and hip hammock. worked great. the regular baby carrier just put too much weight on shoulders. he was around 25 pounds. not an all-day carrier, but was a relief for him to be held some.

he took his naps snuggled up to me!

good luck

I just purchased a HH a couple of weeks ago. Planning to use it when we go in Feb. So far so good. We have been using it for my 17mo old while Christmas shopping. She is a an escape artist. I can strap her in a shopping cart as tight as she could stand and it takes her seconds before she is standing up facing the other way. She has been pretty happy with it so far.

I will still be nursing my dd when in Disney and she will be 17 months. I was wondering if nursing her in one of these was /is possible, so if she falls asleep I can carry her that way, on and of maybe some things? Thanks

We have one from right start. It is ok. I wouldn't buy this one again, but since I have it, this is what we will use.

She has outgrown the bijorn and loves to be carried.

Camping Griswalds, I have a nursing 17 month now, and will be in WDW in 10 days. :cool1:

Nursing in it isn't a good thing for us, but getting the baby in and out is pretty easy, so that is good. ;)

I have a 20 month old who weighs 25 pounds. I use my hip hammock all the time. I love it!! He likes the closeness too. Just make sure your hip hammock is the new one. All the old ones were recalled since the strap failed in many carriers. The new ones have the new fasteners. We go to Disney all the time, since we live close by. So many times people have stopped me to ask what kind of carrier I'm using. If I take the kids to the parks myself, it's so much easier to strap ds into the hip hammock and carry the stroller when we have to board the tram or bus.

My son is now 28 lbs, but I've used it since he was about 25-26 lbs. I bought it based on recommendations and ended up buying new off ebay since the price was better than toys r us.

I like a few things about it: ease of getting child in/out, very easily adjusts around waist and shoulder strap, SUPER EASY FOR NURSING, and actually I use it for my son for afternoon naps when he just doesn't settle easily. Getting him to sleep easily is well worth the price I paid for it, even if I don't use it out very much. 10 minutes in the hip hammock with a little motion and nursing, and he's asleep, and I easily put him down. This probably would be useful in disney in the hotel room.

I don't like to keep him in it for more than 10 minutes or so at a time, since I find the shoulder strap really uncomfortable after that time. And I am used to carriers, since I've owned and tried so many over 7 or so years. It's not one I would recommend for long periods (1-2 hours) unless baby is small. Just my $0.02

I don't think you could nurse in a hip hammock. I have one that I bought when I adopted my dd at 20 months, and you carry the baby over to the side, with no way to switch the position. I would say go with a sling. I nursed my boys in these all the time.

There is no way to nurse in the hip hammock while standing or walking. You can nurse while sitting if you loosen the straps. I was going to get a Mayan sling originally, but since I use mine year round, I felt they were too hot for my child in the summer. The Hip hammock has more breathing room. My friend from NY swears by her Mayan Sling.

The baby care centers are a great place to nurse! There are rockers! At Epcot you can control the amount of light hitting your rocker. At the Animal Kingdom's baby care center, you are in your own private room, with baby changer and rocker. MGM's baby care center is just 2 private dressing rooms with a rocker. Any way you look at it, the baby care centers are the best place for diaper changes. They are so much cleaner than the public bathrooms.

Like I posted above, I put my son in it on left hip, loosen the strap on the shoulder to lower his position (keep waist strap tight) and let him nurse on left side while I walk. That was one of the reasons why I originally got the carrier, because the sling was not comfortable for nursing.

It really is simple to nurse the baby in the hip hammock since you can easily adjust where baby sits or how close he is to you.

I also bought the original Nancy Swanke hip hammock. This one is very difficult to nurse a baby in because the straps are not adjustable once baby is on. But absolutely you can nurse a baby in hip hammock especially a 17 month old.

I'm only 4 ft 11 inches, and I was unable to nurse him in the hip hammock while standing. He would have been bunched up in a ball if he had tried. Maybe it's just because I'm petite and he is big.
