DD (5) wants a playstation 2. I really don't have any experience with the video game systems.

What is better for her?

Is Xbox better or is there another game system????

I am not sure why see wants one.

My son has both. The Playstation 2 in my opinion really has a bigger variety of games that HE likes to play. My DH is the one who enjoys the X-Box system....more adult based games.

But isn't it the GameCube that is really geared towards younger children?? Unless they have come out with another one this year.

I would go with the PS2. As stated, more variety of games, and it will also play old Playstaion One games also, so it basically doubles the library. And you can get a good deal on MANY PS1 games.

Just keep in mind that Playstation requires the use of memory cards to save games, and you must use a seperate card for PS1 and PS2 games.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I have just about every system made so far ( Atari 2600!!) and really know my games.

We have both and my ds prefers the x-box. Our playstation has already had to be repaired once and sometimes still acts up. We never had any problems with our x-box (knocking on wood). One thing about the playstation 2 that is better is when you watch a dvd you can use the controller to start/stop/pause/etc your movie but with the x-box I had to buy a seperate remote to watch the dvd's.

I say Playstation 2 or Gamecube. I am a gamer too and I want an XBOX but I just don't like the game selection enough to buy one.

Really examine game selection first before you buy the system and then RENT games before buying for a 5yo.

Only because of your DD's age, I would say gamecube ... more kids games. DS (15) has Xbox and, DD (5) CAN hold the controller but, it's quite large for little hands.

If it's the DVD player you're looking to also get, I'd probably get a PS2, as others mentioned, more games from orig PS also. Altho, my bro is on his 2nd PS2 because the first stopped working. :(

Sorry, I'm no help!

Does she have a gameboy?

My DD 5 likes her gameboy advance SP a ton. She also likes the gamecube.

I would go with PS2 just cuz of the game selection it I had to choose between the 2. There seem to be more games for the littler kids. At her age, the edge x-box has with graphics probably won't matter too much.

DS 16 says...Playstation 2

Alright, laright, let's back this horse and buggy up a bit...

I realize I am living in the dark ages, but are you saying that an X-box cna play DVD's? Like the movies? Really? Is is standard or is there something you need to upgrade with?

(Boy, do I feel stupid...)

All the x-boxes come equiped to play DVD's but you have to buy a remote for the box. It is 2 parts--one goes into one of teh controller slots and the other part is the remote. We paid $30 for ours but someone else stated they bought theirs on e-bay less.

Because of your DD's age, I would say Gamecube. More games geared for her age. As for PS2 against X-Box, my boys play their X-box (and GC) way more than PS2. In fact, they are talking of selling/trading it in along with some of the games. They rarely ever play it.

DS's have had PS2 since it came out. They also have gamecube. When a game is available for both systems, they ALWAYS opt to get it for PS2. There have only been about 3 or 4 games, that were made for x box only, that they wish they could have. Also we have not had any problems with our PS2 and it has been taken places. One thing nice about game cube is we got the wireless controllers, no wires to trip over!! And we saw that Madcatz will be making wireless controllers for PS2! :bounce:

I would go with PS2-it has the DVD player capability, Plays the most games, and Sony does not obsolete its products-PS2 plays PS1 games. I would not purchase a game cube because of past experiences with Nintendo products and X-box is a microsoft product-and that all I am gonna say about that.

In terms of pure performance it is widely accepted that:
Xbox > GC > PS2

But its the games that make the system. Find which system has the most game that you will play.

We have the Playstation 2 and the Gamecube, and I won't be buying the X-Box for a while. Most of the X-Box games seem to be geared to adults or older teens and we're quite happy with the systems we have right now. My 10 year old loves his Playstation 2 while I prefer the Gamecube. But as far as performance goes, I think that all three do just fine.

Keep in mind that the Gamecube is the 1st system that Nintendo has produced that can't seem to make them any money. While I don't mean to infer that they are about to pull the plug on the system, Sega pushed and promoted their Saturn up to the very end but after losing so much money, the company that used to be Number 1 in the industry (Genesis pulled ahead of NES & SNES), they now are a software company. The Gameboy has run strongly and still defeats all of it's competition so Nintendo won't abandon that.

Between the X-Box & PS2, for a 5 year old, I would go with the PS2. We own all 3 and DD6 likes the games better and the controller is better suited to smaller hands. Now, if it's really Mom or Dad that the system is for, the decision becomes more difficult. We look at lots of factors when choosing games that are available on all systems. Graphics are better on the X-Box but the control is better on the PS2.
The PS2 will play DVDs out of the box but the XBox needs a separate remote (eBay for less than $20) w/shipping).
The PS2 needs a memory card to save games but the XBox has a built in hard drive. The hard drive also helps haves to load faster so there's less time in between levels.
Supply is good right now and they don't predict that there will be shortages like in the past so I would wait 'till closer to Christmas for a possible (although denied by both companies) price drop or better bundled package.
Either way, they are both great systems. Look at the games that are available (remember that the PS2 can play the old regular Playstation games as well and some of these can be had for absolute bargain prices). Listen to any information that you get from the store clerks but remember that there may be internal pushing towards one system over another (I worked in one of the bigger gaming specialty stores for 12 years and it DOES happen).
Good luck & have fun!

It is really DD and we are not even sure if we are going to get it.

I don't see when she would have time to play and has never really been into videos games.

She enjoys her computer games.

This maybe something that she is hearing in school.
