Sony choose yet again the UK/Europe as the customers they favour letting down. I just hope that the purchasing public vote with their wallets in the other directions now and show $ony what they think of them. Doubtful it will happen though.

Not good to all those employees of software houses who will now be losing their jobs, retailers etc. Whether you like Sony or not, they are a massive global employer (their own factories and also all the support industries), and issues like these will have a major impact on many people's lives. So to all those people that are affected, I wish you well.

I doubt many people will be losing their jobs because of a (let's face it, expected) delay in consumer product that will sell millions of units over the next 5-6 years. The delay should be a god-send to some of the software houses as it should give them more time to test their software and make the most of the new hardware.

On the contrary, there are a number of software houses already indicating that they will have an issue with cashflow. This usually means that they will be entering a phase of negative cashflow in the period where their original business plan would have indicated a pre Christmas / Christmas / 2 weeks post Christmas "Big Bang" cash input. This cash input will now be phased into quarter 2 2007 from quarter 4 2006, and the "big Bang" will not be quite as big because of the lack of Christmas.

The software houses, to keep their level of investment going over this extra 2 quarters, will now need a greater input from the banks, costing them more money. Also the profits made from this first "Big Bang" would have gone into early investment of new releases - also now delayed.

Also, all the manufacturers of the extra hardware (buying the extra handset etc) will now no longer need to produce them until next year.

In the meantime, companies will now need to look at "rebalancing", "downsizing", "separation" (call it what you will), and offload staff in the pre-Christmas period.

They may very well take on staff again in the first quarter of next year as demand picks up, but the damage will already have been done to those wage earners who themselves would have needed the money for their Christmas.

Well, any company expecting a console to be released worldwide on time is living in a dream world. It happened to the original PS, the N64, PS2, X-Box, 360 et all.

All I have to say is who cares about a PS3 when you can get a Wii instead. ;)

...but if you have a Wii, you might find that Sony "slash" the price of the PS3 :rotfl2:

If they are planning to release it before Christmas in the US, would the US model work in the UK. We will be in the US for Christmas and I was thinking about getting one for my nephew for Christmas but am unsure if it would work.

Thanks for your help.

Ive bought a few consoles in the USA. The standardisation of HDTV means there is no longer the issue of NTSC/PAL problems where some older UK TV's were incapable of displaying an NTSC signal, so pretty much all you will need is a 2:1 stepdown transformer (220 to 110V convertor) for about 20 quid from Maplins. Note that the console is unlikely to play UK games, but there will be no shortage of US titles available from ebay or the likes of dvdboxoffice.com

Nintendo would have scooped the market at christmas anyway with the Wii. Sony don't want to go head to head in a battle they'd lose

I totally agree! I'm so excited for the Wii :woohoo:
Nintendo do everything on a much better scale than Xbox and Sony. They take time over their consoles rather than try to rush them out like Sony.
I can't wait!!!!!! And with the movement sensitive controller I'll be able to get exercise and play nintendo! :rotfl:

I suspect that a most people using this formum might well be more inclined to purchase nintendo products, given the family type nature of Disney, and the similar target audience for Nintendo.

Another interesting snippet on PS3, or more specificaly the Blu-ray disks it uses.....
I read yesterday a transcript of an interview with a senior engineer/designer at Toshiba, where he talked about their new products and what they had on the horizon. Toshiba have of course signed up to the HD-DVD camp, not BluRay, but one of their concerns of Blu Ray is that aparantly the data on the disk is extremely close to the surface of the disk (whereas HDDVD is more central, like existing DVD's). What this means according to him ist that the Blu Ray disks are going to be extremely sensitive to finger prints and dust/scratches etc.
That kind of makes the format significantly less attractive to parents doesnt it....
One things for sure, this battle for console supremacy is going to be very interesting for the likes of me, who will buy all 3 models anyway (eventualy).
