We are just waiting for the sirens. Our neighbors are having an Animal House type keg party, it is filled with drunken idiots lighting off fireworks. BIG fireworks. Cross your fingers my house doesnt get hit.

Eric is a friend of mine and we are waiting for an update on his condition- he was in serious condition as of this morning. He has young kids of his own too.
ETA- they were not able to reattach his arm.

I saw that this afternoon on Newsday's web site (http://www.newsday.com/long-island/man-who-lost-arm-to-fireworks-in-critical-condition-1.2077841) when I was looking up where to see the fireworks tonight. It was over in Islip Terrace. Hope he is doing ok.

<gasp!> I'm so sorry, aprilgail2! I certainly didn't mean to be so insensitive with my OP.

I usually think of news stories as one of those things that always happen to "other" people, and you never think you or someone you know actually knows them. Which is also why I posted. We usually think this only happens to some mysterious "other" people and can't happen to us personally.

Again, I'm so sorry for my OP title, and for what has happened to your friend.

Well I will give you that he may not be the smartest guy in the world but he is a nice, funny, hard working man with a wife and kids- works 2 jobs (well he did-don't know what is going to happen now as they were both physical jobs).
And honestly I would be posting the same thing as you if I didn't know him personally!!

There was a car fire and explosion this morning in the parking lot across the street from us. After reading all of these firework threads it clicked in my head that these people set of a few fire cracker things in their parking lot every year. I wonder if they had them stored in their car this year and something happened that they ignited and started the fire. The fire spread to two other cars. Very scary. Needless to say, they had no fireworks over there tonight. Hmmm...

It bears repeating...explosives, even small ones, do NOT belong in the hands of John/Jane Public. I am so glad I don't live in Islip anymore. I had my horse there years ago and spend the 4th hanging at the barn trying to calm to the horses.

Yes, this hitting so close to home (so to speak) should really help drive home the dangerous nature of the reaction we often see here on the DIS boards in response to various warnings regarding things like this (most recently, it was "loosen up" ). Things are typically made illegal for reasons.
