Here's a neat idea for you in lieu of playdough. (I teach 2's and got this from a book I use for planning):

Cut pieces of yarn in various lengths and colors. Let your child stick them to a sheet of sandpaper. You can store them in a large Ziploc bag. Simple, cheap and easy (and not messy or odorous!)

What a fantastic idea! I'm going to suggest that to my sister for my youngest nephew. They are driving down from CT in February, and that would be a great diversion!
