I currently have an American Express gold skymiles card. I have been pricing flights to Hawaii for our upcoming vacation. In the selection process, I am offered an upgrade to platinum along with bonus miles and a statement credit. The downside is there is an annual fee, but the vacation insurance coverage is pretty good. In the verbiage for the trip insurance, it is noted that a trip must be paid in full using the platinum card. The issue I have is that I already put a deposit on our cruise using the gold card.

Does anyone have any idea if I could still get the coverage? I will call to verify, but I was interested in hearing others’ experiences.

Yes it should still qualify since you paid the invoice on your current AMEX. I believe that they are changing options on your existing account to upgrade it versus canceling the old account and issuing a new one. Kind of like when you lose a bank card - you get a new card and number but it's still the same account.

That’s what I was hoping.

Can you transfer the miles during the purchase and satisfy everything?

Someone told us the perks for travel and such for the Platinum far outweigh the cost mostly because the value in other travel cards are just so meager now. Before Covid our miles were useful, now we're really just waiting to use the miles and drop the card we have. Please share what happens, the only reason I didn't switch was it is so pricey so I'm curious.

OP is talking about a different card. OP is talking about a Delta Platinum credit card, not an AMEX Platinum charge card.
OP, you'd get a much more reasoned and thorough analysis in the credit card thread on the budget board subforum.

The title of the thread is Platinum American Express....

I'm going to assume the OP misspoke. In the OP, they talk about having a Delta Gold Card and being offered an upgrade to a Platinum while booking a flight. The Delta Gold card can not be upgraded to an AMEX Platinum, but can be upgraded to a Delta Platinum. Delta does not offer vanilla AMEX cards during the booking process, only the Delta co-branded card. And AMEX does not offer miles or statement credits for the Platinum, they offer MR points only.

The two names are very similar, but the card benefits are very different. It sounds like OP is talking about the Delta Skymiles Platinum Card based on the offer upgrade from their Gold Card. The Amex Platinum is never advertised as an upgrade from the Skymiles gold.

We both recently got BUSINESS Platinum AMEX cards recently with 250,000 point promotions, after $15,000 spend in three months, but we've been booking some luxury cruises lately and so fortunately (or unfortunately) that wasn't a problem.

Anyway, be sure that if you get the AMEX Platinum, do check American Express Travel for hotel rates. We booked four nights at Halekulani in HNL as a stopover ouon our way back from our Tokyo Cruise and Tokyo Disney trip, and they offered a $100 resort credit (big deal) and free full daily breakfast (a big deal) for the same price the hotel website was asking for room-only.
