I've been dealing with a lot of items are sold in those sealed plastic packages that are often molded in the shape of the contents. You know the ones... you almost need a chainsaw to get them open! Of course, you have to be careful not to damage the contents while you're chissling away at the package.

I was wondering if anyone has an easy way of getting the purchased item out safely without slicing off a finger with the razor knife. I installed a new digital thermostat yesterday and getting it out of the package took longer than the installation.

Thanks in advance for any good suggestions!

I recently saw a device that was for sale that opened all of these types of packages safely and quickly. I don't remember where that was though.

Warm it up with your hair dryer before you open it...the plastic then won't be sharp and it is much easier to cut open with scissors or anything else!

Remember when you were 3 and the box was more fun than the toy? :teeth:

Sorry - no solution here - REALLY looking foward to opening all those packages on Christmas morning again... :rotfl:

I hate those things! I actually posted about that awhile back.

I still struggle with those things, but there is a tool I'm thinking of that might help. I got one for my DH a few years ago but I think he misplaced it. It's basically a heavy duty pair of scissors. I remember seeing an infomercial which showed it's wide variety of usage; it worked on all kinds of thick things like rope, fabric, plastic, etc.

I'm not sure if this is the same one or not because it doesn' list all of those uses, but it looks very similar to what I'm talking about.

scissors tool

hope this helps.

Ha ha--I posted something in the stupid injury thread about how I can never seem to get one of those blasted things open without losing at least a pint of blood in the process. For whoever posted the idea about the hair dryer, thanks a lot! I never would've thought of that, but I'll sure try it the next time!! :)

I keep a heavy duty pair of scissors in my kitchen and usually resort to these to open those type packages. Only thing...the edge where you cut will usually be sharp enough to slice your arm off.

I do the same thing ... heavy duty scissors (normally reserved for cutting through chicken bones)

Many of those packages are sealed using a process called sonic welding and hair dryers really do work on those types. Heat the edges and pull them apart.

We also have a pair of heavy duty scissors for the other types.
