Plastic Cutlery in Studios - Why?

I was not aware of people taking them fro 1br and 2br units why would they do so in studios?:confused3

You would be surprised what has disappeared from the one bedroom and larger units...salt and pepper shakers, cloth napkins, napkin rings, place mats...all hitched a ride home with enough people that OKW no longer supplies them.

I'd have been happier with the paper plates that the ones that were in AKV 2 bdr :goodvibes Those dishes were so heavy and akward, but I guess they fit the theme. As for mugs...it's my excuse to buy a new one each year! I need my coffee, and those little tiny tea cups just don't cut it.:surfweb:

As far as cups go, that's why we have large mugs in our Owner's Locker, along with a paring knife. I think I may pack a couple of plastic bowls for our trip in November when we'll be in a studio though, then leave them in the locker too.

I agree! When I fly and am able to have a free bag, I bring larger mugs for DH and me! When I forget, it's back and forth from the balcony, not relaxing at all!

 Can we talk about the limited supply of towels, now? :cutie:

Commercial high speed glassware sterilizers are not made for cutlery. and again, the plasticware is individualy wrapped at the factory, to do so with cutlery would be much more expensive, the paper wraps and employee time to do it is cost prohibitive compared to plastic ware. And, the studios were shown in the models with plastic ware and paper plates/bowls, but were shown with ceramic mugs and glass drinking glasses, thus removing the glassware long term really wasn't an option as it changed substantially what was represented, the cutlery does not, and would be an unnecessary expense to our dues to purchase, clean and maintain.

I have a question on your first sentence. How do you know what kind of sterilizers they are using? Are you saying when they take the glasses and mugs out of the studios to wash, the kind of dishwashers they use would not have a cutlery container? How exactly would you know such a detail?
And you last comment, an "unnecessary expense to our dues"...how much do you seriously think would add to our dues for mousekeeping to grab a spoon and fork and throw it in the dishwasher, along with the mug?

Didn't I read on here not so long ago that DVC was installing dishwashers for the housekeepers to use on the Studio glasses? I could swear I did... and it was in relation to an SSR thread about them bring back glassware to the studios. Hmmmm.

or maybe I'm just imaging things ... oh look...

Exactly, Disney stated they were installing glassware cleaners.

Commercial glassware cleaners do not have a place for silverware. If they need to clean glasses/mugs for 100+ studios on a given day, they are going to use high speed commercial units, maybe chemical sanitizers that don't require a hot water line to be run to the location. Surely they aren't using the standard household type dishwashers that take 30 minutes or so to wash & dry, and hold relatively few glasses/mugs.

What do you think it would cost to purchase enough new cutlery to supply all the studios in the DVC system?

I am sorry, I do not see a need to add flatware to the studios. There were plenty of times they would be nice. Before we got our Owners Locker, we did pack these kinds of things we needed. I have gone into 1br and 2 br units with flatware missing. I have also had glassware and utensils missing. I have found light bulbs missing from units. We even had a vacuum cleaner missing before. We have reported all of these. We have been members since 2001. I would say over 90% of the time everything was there. I for one was missing the glassware when they were taken out. I called mousekeeping and they brought what I asked for.

Would I be right to presume it would not bother you if silverware was not available in any of the rooms? For me personally when I am welcomed home, I would expect to have standard cutlery, the same type (metal) in fact if I was at home

But this still does not answer the question, why it is available in the larger accommodation and not the studios? There does not seem to be a definitive answer that has been posted yet

Sorry, but I think it was in fact answered several times throughout this thread (even in your original post you admitted to knowing there is no dishwasher in a studio). That is why & it's a simple answer. You cannot rely on someone to properly wash their dishes in that dinky little sink. And Mousekeeping simply cannot keep up with replacing all of the cutlery AND dishes AND glassware inbetween each guest. That's just an absurd thought. That would be a full time job to keep up with. We are lucky at this point that they now replace the glassware.

Send MS an e-mail and ask and post if you get something worth sharing.

If I recall, about a year ago, we all united and sent member services emails to get the real coffee mugs and glasses back in the studios. How much employee time, I mean seriously, would it take to throw a couple of spoons and knives in the dishwasher along with the mugs? So why aren't we fighting for this. I say let's do it. I think it's reasonable to have at least two of each, 2 spoons, 2 knives, 2 forks. What do you say, should we all send emails, together again?

A studio sleeps 4, so if you, your spouse and your 2 kids are staying there, who gets to eat and who doesn't?

People do take them from the 1BR+larger units as well. The difference there is because the 1BR+ units have a full kitchen, it would be kind of stupid not to replenish the silverware. Kind of like "Here's your nice full kitchen folks, but, oops, sorry you can't eat in it because you have no forks!". The studios do not have a full kitchen, so less of a need for real silverware.

In our contracts, does it say Disney HAS to provide these things to us? (silverware, plates, cups etc)

Perhaps if Disney has an issue with people removing what has nicely been added for all to use, if could they get away with not stocking things such as silverware and then we'd have the option of signing out a set. Meh - I don't like the complications of such a deal - scratch that.

Basically, they can not substantially change what we purchased. For instance, they can't replace the King beds with single beds or replace the sleeper sofa with a non-sleeper couch, etc. This may also apply to other furnishings, if the silverware ad mugs/glasses were furnishings originally provided, they likely can't remove them as it makes the room "less functional." They can upgrade, like the the VCRs to DVDs, to accomodate current technology.

Please take a deep breath. I said I do not see a need to replace the plastic flatware with the same flatware in a larger unit. I was putting an opinion different than allot stated in this thread. There are statements that stuff were not taken from larger units and my experiences are otherwise. The cost added to putting regular flatware in and upkeep of such is more than I am willing to pay for in my dues. We can disagree on what is or isn't. My opinion is one of the reasons for the current plastic is keeping the flatware clean to legal standards. For studios it is simpler to keep plastic flatware. I have had units that only have the minimum amount and others have a larger quantity. I have found if you ask for something that is provided in other units you can usually get within reason for your use. This was the case when we did not have glass glassware and I requested and got the glass ones.

I think that Vero Beach had gotten rid of the real mugs/glasses in studios before the on site resorts did. We were in a studio once and had styrofoam cups, and I called and eventually we were given 2 ceramic mugs. However, VB has a restaurant, and that seemed to be the problem with OKW and SSR. When all resorts went to styrofoam people there couldn't get the real glasses and mugs because there wasn't washing facilities. That's what some people reported here.

As long as people can request and get real flatware if they want to use them, that's fine with me. I think someone on this thread reported getting them when asked.

I look upon my DVC Studios as an extremely glorified camper.

:scared1::scared1::scared1: To quote Anne Taintor "I enjoy not camping."

but who wants to eat 1/4 c cereal at a time LOL.

OMG this just cracked me up! What were they thinking with those heavy but inconsequential bowls and mugs? If I'm going to have coffee then I am going to have COFFEE.:Think Central Perk or Luke's sized mugs. I wanna be able to SWIM in that mug. :rotfl2: Memo to self: buy some real coffee mugs for my Owner's Locker. ;)
.

I usually bring a few glad plastic containers for storage and to use as cereal bowls.
