Plastic card tickets instead of Magicbands

Thank you everyone! This will make a couple of the males in my family happy!

As an add on question: Say grandparents decide they aren't going to make it to the park in time to use their Fast Passes that afternoon. Can grand kids use the grandparents' cards to access the Fast Passes. From what I read it is't "wrong" to use someone else's Fast Pass in your party, but will they work if that person hasn't actually entered the park? Not sure how sophisticated the system is.
Yes, this will work, even if the person doesn't enter the park. Did it recently with a bit of trepidation at first, worked with no issue (and the name on the MB was clearly a mans name and the user was not, didn't even get a seconds hesitation from any CM's for a full 5 days)

I don't like actually wearing the Magic Band either. I have always hooked it on the strap of my purse or fanny pack. It stays there just fine, is not in the way, and is easily used at the Fast Pass locations.

I hate the stupid magic bands and stopped using mine. I hate the fact that when you ride a ride which takes your photo it will use your magic band to identify you and then send you endless emails trying to sell you a copy of that photo.

I hope this was an isolated incident. Disney's legal department probably expects much more strict adherence to a posted policy regarding guest privacy than they would for something like handing out rider switch passes.

I'm also not sure how it would mess up the system to issue cards since they are just copies of the same information and the passive readers shouldn't "know" which copy is being used. Maybe someone more knowledgable about the tech can explain if this is indeed true or if this is just a case of uninformed CMs.
I think it is a case of uninformed Cast Members. There are thousands of off site guests every day using cards instead of Magic Bands with no issues.

Gosh! Soon after the FP+ started, maybe 2 years ago, I tried to use my husband's FP on his MB and I could not use it since he had not entered the park.
The rules just keep changing. Good to read about current experiences here.

Just dazzle 'em with BS.
So many cases of someone making up information, trying to impress with "facts" that are pulled out of thin air.
"Oh, our whole system will lock up if there's an RFID card used to open the door."

Well that would be two CM's at AOA one was the manager and one CM at the front desk of BWI. Since I was talking about/and responding to a post about on site not off site and the ability to use a card for room access and room charging is not even applicable for off site guests.

Nobody said you can't use your park pass for park access and FP+.

All part of the same cadre' of CMs with bad info.
Whether coming from ignorance, or just making up things to get rid of guests making requests, it's all incorrect.

Agree - as an AP holder for many years who visits at least 4x a year I have seen several incidences of misinformed CM's - although the Manager at AOA did surprise me.

Just want the OP to be prepared for the possibility that the front desk won't issue or will have trouble issuing key cards for the room vs magic bands.

FWIW for those who just don't like to wear the band due to comfort the new lighter version is much more comfortable.

I tend to think they are required to do everything to keep people in magic bands, and may have been "officially" told this BS in the past.

I might go along with that if I thought Disney even bothered to train their staff anymore.

At AOA the CM even brought over the manager (I was pretty accepting of the answer but they went above and beyond to try and address my concerns!) and he said in no uncertain terms that the card messes up the system and he couldn't guarantee that after issuing the card to me that the other MB's in our party would work properly. Once again (just last month) I asked at BWI and the CM just politely advised me against this saying it causes more problems than it solves, and this time I was solo!

I'm guessing they do this to head off complaints with the door readers not recognizing the new ID versus the MagicBands they already set up for you, and to then not have to go out and finagle with the lock.

Unlike the networked tapstiles and FP+ entrances, the room locks are 'semi autonomous' in that they are sent a list of valid IDs and the date range they're valid for (probably for the next 3-5 days). Since they're battery operated, the locks probably only update their list of IDs (cards or bands) daily. If they handed you a card at the desk that's "new," it probably won't work for a day, and then they'd have to deal with aggravated guests complaining the door doesn't work with the card.

That's why if you get a new MB at the park, your FP+s work immediately with it, but the new MB tends to not open the hotel room until the next day or so.

I'm guessing the only way to get the door to update its list is to physically go to the door and trigger it to re-poll; that is, there may not be a way to "push" to the doors on demand. In cases of an eviction this works fine, since presumably the hotel manager will be there in person to trigger the re-poll.

Regular hotels don't have this problem because the locks are much stupider there - at a regular hotel, the next guest's card is what turns off your card. But at WDW, guests may have their room card weeks before they arrive, so the lock has to have a list of valid IDs and dates.
