A friend and I finished the Princess half last year, and we are going to do it again. I have been battling with plantar fasciitis, though. While I have been to the doctor a couple of times, I had resigned myself to dealing with the pain. I went back to the doctor, though, yesterday and was told "no exercise" for a while, and if it doesn't heal we may be looking at surgery. Any words of wisdom or advice either for the foot or training? This is incredibly frustrating after trying taping, new shoes, cortisone, etc.

can you get a script for physical therapy?

PT will not heal PF since it is essentially tendonitis, but PF can be a result of another issue/weakness in the body creating an over use issue in the PF tendon. It would be worth a try.

As you try to heal up, roll the foot over a golf/tennis ball and a frozen OJ can to help with the pain. I would take an anti-inflamatorry to help with the inflammation. I am not sure night splints really work, but you may want to try them. Finally, never take your first step out of bed barefoot. Get a pair of fairly firm soled slippers and slide your feet into them before putting weight on the foot. The theory is that your body is knitting repairs all night while you are off the foot and the first thing you do when getting out of bed is rip most of the repair out. I have nothing to back this up other than the advice of an old orthopedic surgeon.

I also have plantar fasciitis. What works for me is tai chi once a week and osteopathy once a month, plus Nike Air shoes. I go to a taoist tai chi club, this is a non-profit international organization, there might be a club in your area. I can check if you tell me where you live. They have classes for special needs like yours. I also have knee problems and was told I needed surgery. That was about 15 years ago. Tai chi helped me avoid surgery.

Standing in line is also much worse than walking for me so I carry a foldable stool to the parks.

Good advice as well. Never walk barefoot especially in the morning or at night. I also have stretching exercises I do in bed before getting up each morning.

If you don't have firm soled slippers but do have something like a loafer, try that. When I had PF a few years ago I left a pair of Bass loafers next to my bed. Slipped my feet into them as I got up. Made for a very preppy look with my pjs :rotfl2: but it worked.
