We are planning a trip to Disneyworld in Mid May. We have 6 kids. Girls ages 15, 14, 10 and boys ages 7, 5, 5. We are a bit intimidated at how to go about scheduling our 4 to 5 days at Disney. Any advice would be appreciated.:wizard:

Start reading! There's a TON of information on these boards and on the main site, wdwinfo. I also really like Tour Guide Mike, a subscription service. He sponsors the theme parks and strategies forum on here, and you can get a discounted subscription rate by clicking on the ad and joining through the DIS. I haven't tried his advice yet, but lots of people on here have and they swear by it. There's also lots of information there, and more forums to ask yet more Disney experts all your questions.

As for books, I like the Unofficial Guide and Passporter, but I don't think you need both.

Have fun!

I just bought the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2007 yesterday and it is amazing. There is so much info and planning and money saving tips. Its about $20 but its worth it.

One of the greatest things we found is the character meal. If there is any characters that your kids (or parents;) ) just have to meet see if they have a character meal. This way they come right to your table so you dont have to wait in line. I found that in itself was well worth the money.
You made the most important step-coming to the DisBoars. You will find that everyone here seems to have so much information and the forums are filled with everything you need to know.
Are you planning on staying off-site or on?

I Agree with hvivona. I recieved a copy of this for Christmas (along with about 5 other Disney books) and it is a great book! There is a ton of insight into ways to save money, where to stay, how things rate in and around Disneyworld....
One of the best things I've learned on this board is to buy souveniers BEFORE you go to the world. My family each gets one thing (usually a sweatshirt)(From Disney World), then I pack a little something for my DD's and give them each one thing a day while we're there. It's a great way to say money but your kids still think they are getting lots of stuff!
Good luck!

I always start by checking out the operating hours of all the parks as well as which parks have EMH. Of course, there is debate about whether to attend the EMH parks or avoid them because of higher crowds. In my experience, erly EMH works out best for us, we tend to avoid the evening EMH parks. If this is your first trip, I would try to get to all of the parks at least once. You will not need a full day for AK and probably not MGM. There is so much to do, you cannot possible see everything in one trip (we've been 6 times and still have not seen it all!) So, gather as much information as you can and get the kids involved in the planning. Make reservations as soon as you can for any dining. I agree that a character meal is a nice treat! Try to catch the nighttime shows and fireworks - they're all really great! Whatever you do, don't overplan and don't stress about it. Remember this is a vacation and it's supposed to be fun! Have a great trip!

Go through the Grand Gatherings CM's when you call to make ADRs. I booked my sister's family trip a few months back, and called to make ressie's for Hoop Dee Doo. I sat on the phone for 10 min trying to work it out (they have 6 kids, too.) The CM finally transferred me to GG, and I had the ressie in no time.

Are you already booked? Where are you staying? Onsite? Honestly, I think figuring out where to stay would be one of your major battles. Another will be booking meals, if your plan on doing any TS. We only have 4 kids and getting a table for 6 is hard enough. Also, there are going to be some things that the older kids want to do that the younger ones can't, be prepared to split up. I also love the UG, it is very thick!!! Better start reading!!!
There is no way you will be able to see and do it all in 4 or 5 days, make sure everyone has a couple of "must sees" and be sure to hit those.

As a MOM of 6 I totally know where you are coming from.... its like planning for a group event as apposed to just a family vacation. My best advice as someone who has traveled from WI to FL with 6 kids several times is MAKE SURE YOU TAKE ENOUGH TIME... There is so much at the theme parks that you cant possibly see everything you need to in one day.... especially magic kingdom. With all those ages its hard to do what they all want to do and still relax and have fun just going for one day.... you find your rushing all over the park and at the end of the day... you realize you have spent more time waiting in lines and walking across the park then you have anything else. Trips to disney cost a small fortune for everyone then when you have a big family it becomes that much more.... as parents it gets tough so more days there help that immensely. ALSO- Bring as much food as you can to help cut costs because you can easily spend $60-$80 for one meal there. WE always pack food and put it in a locker for atleast one meal then we arent toting it around all day. WE always look online and find the site that gives each parks resturants and their menus/prices and right down where we are going to eat before we ever get there so we know we are eating at the most affordable place for us because otherwise you eat somewhere and dont know if there is someplace better hidden somewhere else.... AS a stress reliever we always establish ahead of time what the kids spending money is.... we give them $100 each.... we put it on a gift card for them and then we arent fighting with them on getting things all the time.... they know their limit and they learn to wait just to make sure they are making wiser purchases.... I always make sure my kids know exactly what is happening, what they can expect (for souveniers/meals etc) and where we will be what days and I find that my trips with 6 kids are by far less stressful then some of the small families I see at disney screaming at their kids that are crying for things all day long. AS a mom of 6 kids you already have learned some tricks and oganization skills I assure you.... I am sure if you put all that into your disney planning you will do just fine!!:laundy:

To momofsix. do you have any samples of how you spent your time. - which days at which parks and how long at each park. We have taken our kids to Disneyland/Ca Adventures two times. They all love rides. The faster the better. Do you have any suggestions on purchaseing Disney tickets. Do you suggest the park hopper option? That adds about $400 to the ticket prices. Thanks for your input.

WE have learned that we need atleast a week there.... we have done less then that but it ends up being very stressful for everyone.

I understand your extra $400 park hopper ordeal... we dont do it because with a big family its a significant increase in the trip... we think it would be nice sometimes obviously but not $400 nice.

I dont know about you but I am not in the habit of letting everyone do their own thing... its a $6000+ trip each time we go therefore we are spending it together so my kids all hang together and we do all the things they want to do.... if someone is to young or doesnt want to go on a specific ride.... we do the child swap and therefore everyones happy. If my 3 year old little girl wants to see the beauty and the beast stage show... my 17 year old son goes with and doesnt complain.... my kids are close and he enjoys seeing his sister excited seeing the princess's and anything else....

We spend half day at epcot but thats the day we arrive in FL.... there isnt that much there that my kids really want to do... we have done full days in past... cuz everyone has to learn things for themselves...

We spend 2 days at MK.... we dont do the two days right in a row... it depends on when the extra magic hours are and when the parades are going on....

We spend 1 day at Mgm and havent ever had a problem getting it all in that one day....

we spend 1 day at Animal kingdom and thats also a short day.... also that night we sometimes enjoy the boardwalk or downtown disney for a couple hours....

then we have another day available in case a park was ruined by rain or we decide we want to get some more of another park... my kids vote on this day and where we will go and so far they havent fought about it once.

We always do the value resorts because we have to get two rooms and its cheaper then getting a suite at a higher up resort....we ask for connecting rooms and have always had our request fullfilled. Staying onsite and offsite with a big family... onsite is less headache even if you can find places cheaper....

I always pack food for breakfasts and for one meal in the park.... I always check for where im going to eat in the park and their menus and prices and thats where we head.... no fussing over where we will eat and no going over budget.... I dont know your financial situation but my husband is an civil engineer/hydrogeologist and I work part time as an executive admin so we arent at poverty level BUT I am careful with where the $$$'s go and I personally dont think the charactor dining experiences are worth the money you spend.... I always think you can eat cheaper somewhere else and find the charactors through the park somewhere for free.....

I do utilize the unofficial guide although I try not to put to much stock into all the opinions as that can drive you batty....

my trips are relatively smooth because my kids always know what to expect before hand.... I explain that we will have breakfast at resort, bring some snacks with, eat lunch at park and sit down and have packed dinner in the evening.... also they are each allowed one in park snack a day.... ice cream or whatever.... my kids dont have big appetites while we are there so its never been an argument. Also I tell my kids what their spending limit is for fun things... shirts and what not.... I keep a small notebook in my bag with a tally and they always know what their total is.... never had an argument with this either and lots of times they dont spend what they could.... $100 each.
Hardest thing for me as the mom and the one that makes all the plans is to relax and remember to have fun and slow down sometimes.... I just try so hard to make it perfect for everyone that I forget to take it easy. ALSO I realized that I dont slow it down taking pics.... I walk up to something... tell my kids to go stand there and snap a pic.... I have made a conscience effort to take more pics with my kids by themselves.... so they have those individual memories and pics of just them to share someday with their kids.... I think I do that because I dont want to slow people up behind us but I have decided that we waited our turn in line so im taking the time I need....

Hope this helps... anything else, just ask!
