Planning trip to DL and S. Cal in 2008, need help

We are planning a DL trip in 2008. We will want to spend about 4-5 days in the general area. We thought about taking Amtrak to explore other areas. Does anyone have suggestions on any "must sees" in the area?

The Amtrak service isn't very good, except for getting to the Aquarium in Long Beach. I would plan to rent a car, and do your driving trips on Saturday and Sunday when the traffic is lighter and the DL crowds are heaviest.
