Planning trip from US to UK

Hi,

We live just outside London, so can't help with where to stay I'm afraid. Just wanted to add that we have just done the Shard and "Up at the O2". The Shard is expensive, but you get AMAZING views of the city that you can't get from anywhere else. If you can go up just before sunset. You will see the sun go down and the lights come on over the city - it really is quite something.

If your children are over 10 and you are all relatively fit then I'd also do "Up at the O2". This is a climb over what you may know as the Millenium dome. It really is an amazing experience. There is a lot of information about it on youtube and on the O2 website. You can also do the Cable car at the same time. The dome that you climb over has restaurants and a cinema inside, so you can spend a lot of time there too. The top of the climb is 52 metres up, so it's not for the faint hearted.

I second the museums mentioned. The Natural History Museum has an awesome animatronic T-rex, which my children love. The Science Museum is very good and hands on - they are both free.

The Royal Parks are very good - they have their own website. Our favourite is Hyde Park. If you are coming after 27th July the Olympic Park is changing into the Queen Elizabeth Park, it's going to have a large children's play area and cafe in (along with other things). We are planning on heading there soon after it opens to check it out.

Definitely get an Oyster Card - you will save a lot of money when riding the tube and jumping on and off the buses with that.

Sorry if this is long. I love London and although we live here we spend a lot of time trying to take in the things that you sometimes miss in your own city.
