Planning Spring BReak - MT. Vernon worth it? For Teen?

I laugh every time someone says how much they love the Newseum. remember, it is not the good news museum, it is the horrible tragedy museum, they have tissues in many of the halls. My kids thought it was a terrible downer and begged to go somewhere else!

Spy museum was fun, and crime and punishment looks interesting. Remind the kids that the cemetery tour is not a museum - when we were at a funeral last year the tour groups were coming through, watching. Remind them to act as if they were at a loved one's funeral, because that is what is going on.

:happytv: thanks for the warning!!!:goodvibes

I can't stress this enough. It is located on the National Mall at the corner of 7th Street and Independence Avenue SW. My kids were not impressed with the Air and Space but just love this museum. They have been twice, the highlight of the trip both time. They are now 17 and 20 and just asked to go back this summer.

The art work is modern contemporary so easily open to interpretation by teens and adults alike, the galleries are not crowded, such a great way to view the collection.

Hope you go. You will thank me.

you CAN order the cupcakes ahead of time, we did not...We waited in line at night about 45 minutes but didn't mind it..went almost close to close...We parked in a lot for 20 bucks (I know ripoff!) and walked Georgetown and did spend about 4 hours there...went to SPRINKLES too....and just shopped etc. Definitely going back this year!

Yikes on the parking fee as we only have time to visit the cupcake store. Thank you for the info

Just goes to show that everyone has likes and dislikes. We would not walk across the street again to go to the Hirshorn, but absolutely love Air and Space. :goodvibes

LOL! I know so hard to pick and choose with so much to do. I am not a fan of free museums so that wipes out half the city!:rotfl2: I am there at Spring Break and really don't want the crazy crowds that go with it. Will do American History and DD wants Natural History...AGAIN!

Such a helpful thread!!! You guys are great. thanks!

I work right down the street from Sprinkles and Georgetown Cupcake. There are plenty of Colonial Parking garages around but it's pricey…$20 on weekdays, may be different on the weekends (I have a monthly pass so I don't know). It's a great area but pretty much all shopping or eating and that's pricey too.

BTW, If you're looking for simple sandwiches or salads to take out, I'd recommend TBSP (The Best Sandwich Place) over near the Washington Harbor Hotel, or even better Cafe Tuotu, it's on Penn. Ave right near the Four Seasons. Good food and reasonably priced. There's also a Five Guys on Wisconsin.

Thank you for the great input! So Clydes is near the Verizon center in downtown dc> That is where I am staying near the Verizon Center so if I did Clydes there that would be great. We do have a car but just scratched Mt. Vernon from the list last night. Just not enough time and that really is a long time there etc...

THanks for the tips on Georgetown! so you think Luke Lobster or Unum are the best? THANKS!

There's also a Clyde's in Georgetown on M Street. Sorry, I just saw that mentioned.

I would second Il Canale…it's around the corner from my office and has great pizza.

I love the Sackler and Freer Galleries the best. Not crazy about the Hirshorn.
