Planning our Wilderness Lodge Adventure! Nov 8-15 ~ We are back!

Hey Brook! We just returned from our vacation to the Jersey shore; glad to hear the Mickeyheads arrived, safe and sound! I received the stickers you sent - THANKS! I shall put them to good use!:goodvibes

Have fun camping and making your countdown chart! I have to wonder if Ms. Camster0307 got in any trouble "borrowing" all those Mickey paint chips! :lmao:

If the Home Depot police come knocking, I will deny everything!:rolleyes1

I'm with you - I have so many Mickeyheads, I could do a 60 day countdown; which means I'd have to have the calendar done in two weeks! I think once the girls go back to school next week, I'll really focus on getting this done. I look forward to seeing what yours looks like!

Glad you got the stickers! I have a sticker collection dating back to 1988, I was pleased to find a few sheets of Disney ones. I'm sure my son will love it when he gets a bit older!

I haven't started working on my countdown yet either...trying to recover from camping (984 loads of laundry, bills to pay, gotta do our budget, groceries to buy...:sad2: ). Hopefully in a couple weeks I will carve away some time. I look forward to seeing yours!

08-26-2008 - Camping - Two Harbors, Minnesota Mini-TR

We made great time travelling up north on Friday afternoon-our first glimpse of Lake Superior in Duluth (about 30 minutes from Two Harbors). Please excuse the dirty windshield!

IMG_8919Small.jpg

We made it to our campsite without a problem and were VERY happy with the view! This is taken directly outside our tent.

IMG_8944Small.jpg

We quickly set up camp and Joe went to get a wood bundle right away. We were going to head back into Duluth and ride the scenic railroad that evening, so by the time we would get back the wood shed would have been closed.

IMG_8946Small.jpg

Henry seemed happy exploring the tent!

After setting up camp we got back in the car and headed back to Duluth. We were going to ride the North Shore Scenic Railroad Pizza Train. It is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, a scenic train ride that serves you pizza for dinner.

We found the Depot without a problem and arrived right on time. We explored the Depot a bit

IMG_8975Small.jpg

IMG_8979Small.jpg

Henry waiting to board the train. Doesn't he look like a big boy here?! :guilty:
IMG_8987Small.jpg

The train arrived!
IMG_8993Small.jpg

Henry really enjoyed the view, it was very pretty!
IMG_8998Small.jpg

They specifically told us if we were in a coach that had windows that opened (we weren't), or if we went into the concession coach, which had open sides with just rails up, to NOT stick any limbs out because the trees get so close that it takes paint off the train-it could easily injure a person.

Despite that warning, while in the concession coach I instantly leaned out, completing forgetting about the trees hitting the side of the train. I snapped this shot
IMG_9001Small.jpg

and quickly leaned in, suddenly remembering the warning after seeing that big tree up ahead hitting the train!

Our coach-we could sit in any of them, all of them were a bit different. Ours was a double-decker. We chose the one NO one else was sitting. It was nice, quiet and comfortable.
IMG_9003Small.jpg

After about 30 minutes on the train, the pizza was delivered. Each adult gets a HALF pizza, 4 slices!
IMG_9004Small.jpg

The pizza was nothing special, but good-just Dominos. Joe and I were pleased to see that it was half pepperoni and half sausage-my fav is sausage, his is pepperoni! We thought it was going to be both meats on the entire pizza.

Henry and I enjoying our pizza

Henry enjoying MORE pizza!
IMG_9010Small.jpg

When we reached the halfway point of the ride, the engine disconnected off the front of the train and then passed by us on the other track and hooked up to the end so we could go back along the way we came.
IMG_9026Small.jpg

The conductor was very nice-he stopped and said hello to Henry and chatted with us for a bit. He was an older retired man who said "This is my favorite thing to do on a Friday night. Just can't beat it!"

Henry and I watching the engine go by

IMG_9037Small.jpg

The sun quickly set after this and we rode back in the dark. Joe and I both agreed that it would have been better if the train traveled back quicker to the Depot because we couldn't see anything with the sun set anyway! But, that could have been because by this time Henry was pretty squirmy and exhausted, and Joe and I knew we still had to make a quick stop at Target before heading back to our campsite.

Around 9:00 pm we arrived back at the Depot. It was a fun ride-we would definetly do it again!

After our pit stop at Target we got a bit lost getting out of Duluth. I was exhausted from driving all day, I had a bit of a stomach ache, a GIANT headache due to my contacts-I just switched brands-and was frustrated from getting lost. We eventually made it back, Henry was sound asleep in the car and was NOT happy when we had to change him. It was cold outside and we had to strip him down and change his diaper. He was crying, I felt sick, Joe was trying to build a fire for light... Ya, not fun.

Henry was so worked up from everything it took him a while to get settled and I actually rocked him to sleep-which I haven't had to do in a looooong time, he usually won't let me! After I went and got the awful contacts out of my eyes and got into my comfy pajamas. Joe had the fire going by this point and we enjoyed some s'mores over the fire. (I have a picture from tomorrow night of my s'more to share).

We went to bed about an hour later and hardly slept. The wind was very strong that night and the plastic tent stakes were NOT holding up our tent in the fairly rocky ground. Henry kept waking up crying from the wind...it was cold...ugh. A really rough night.

But, it got MUCH better the next day...

The campsite looks so pretty.

The train ride sounds like a lot of fun.

The windy, cold night sounds exactly why I don't like camping!

Brookelizabeth, I love your mini-TRs! Henry looks so much more like a toddler now! And he is such a cute one! Also, I wanted to congratulate you on your weight loss, I am trying to do the same thing at the moment :goodvibes

Sounds like a typical camping trip so far (some good moments, some bad)! :rotfl: We had a cold windy night on our first trip this year - and made the rookie mistake of not tying down our awning. Big mistake, huge. At 2am we were outside in the wind and rain trying to figure out how to get the awning off the top of the camper without dismantling the entire thing (pop-up). Then I laid awake all night thinking the wind was going to blow the camper over. Luckily the kids slept through it all!

Pizza train sounds fun though! My boys would love it - two of their favorite things in one activity! :woohoo:

Henry is such a cutie!!!

The scenic train ride looks like a lot of fun, but that's a shame for the rough first night. I am glad that it gets better, and I can't wait to read about it!

:lmao: Ya, I could have done without the cold and the wind!
The campsite was so beautiful-Lake Superior is amazing. And the train ride was really fun, even with a squirmy baby who wanted to crawl everywhere.

Thank you! I love writing the Mini-TRs, it's fun and a great way to document our trips before we forget the little details. I'm glad others enjoy them as well. And thank you for the compliment on Henry-he is getting SO big, today he stood alone for the first time. I was shocked! And thank you as well on the congrats for the weight loss. It's been much easier and enjoyable than I thought it would have been WeightWatchers is awesome. I just love it. I've gotten about 10 other gals from church involved because of the success between Joe and I. Of course, this past weekend was a "eat whatever you want" sort of trip, so we'll see if that scale goes down...:rotfl:

That is awful about the awning, but thankfully the kids did sleep through it. I wish Henry had slept through our wind! But all well, we resolved the plastic stakes dilema the next day...

The train was really fun-one particular kid got to follow the conductor around and see everything he had to do. He was just BEAMING. It was surely a special time for the little guy.

Thank you! :goodvibes I should be able to get the next day written sometime today, this evening, or tonight. I have all the pics uploaded, now if work would just stop being so busy I could get caught up on all my DIS threads and share Day 2 with ya'll!! ;)

I am enjoying your mini TR! What fun warm upfor your Disney TR! ;)

Henry is getting so big! What a sweet little smile he has! I cannot believe how much bigger he has gotten over the course of your writing this preTR.

Looking forward to hearing more! :):thumbsup2

If your plans haven't changed, we may run into each other at The Main Street Bakery on Thursday, November 13. The park opens at 8:00 that day, and my husband and I are planning to have breakfast there. I'll check out my home depot to see if I can abscond with any LGMH. ;) I had no idea what you were talking about, but after a quick search of the forum, I thought it sounded like a cute idea. I'll probably have it on the back of our North Texas backpack.

BTW... your before and after weight loss pics are great! Congratulations!

I look back at Henry's pictures-started this PTR at 5 months, he'll be one year on Monday, it's just crazy how much they change in one year isn't it? And your Little Prince is right on his heels growing up so fast!

I'm not certain if we will make rope drop, but chances are higher with a baby that wakes up earlier than we normally would on vacation! :rotfl: I will keep watch for a Texas backpack and a LGMH if you can snag one. I'll have one our bag and our stroller with my DIS name on them.

And thank you for the compliments on pictures! I'm 14 pounds away from my goal, but happy even where I am right now. Between DH and I we have lost over 50 pounds! :woohoo:

08-26-2008 - Camping Mini-TR con't - Day Two

In the morning we finally surrendered to waking up for the day-I think we both woke up about 5 times throughout the night. So we were tired, but excited to face the day. It was cool out and still a bit windy.

I can't remember the exact details, but somehow I managed to have a bit of quiet time alone-Henry must have been still sleeping and Joe was at the tent or something...anyway, I went down to the lake and sat on the beach to just gaze out. Before I knew it a loon popped up!

IMG_9082Small.jpg

The loon is our state bird! I have seen one before, but not very often, so it was a neat thing to see.

After just a bit I turned around to head back to the tent and who did I see standing there with Daddy waiting for me?

Little Mr. Henry!
IMG_9087Small.jpg

Lookin' so cozy in his hoodie and hat.

Eventually we got ready for the day and headed into town for breakfast. We ate at a little cafe and the food was great. I got a typical breakfast, lots of coffee, eggs, toast, hashbrowns, ham. Joe got "bread pudding french toast" that was soooo yummy, but way to sweet for my taste in the morning. Henry had a pancake-which he loudly decleared as "YUM! YUM! YUM!" No food pics-too early, brain not fully functioning without coffee pumping through my veins...but DH did take this one:

IMG_9090Small.jpg

Looks cozy doesn't it?

After breakfast we went to the local "big box" which is called Pamida (not sure if they have these all over, or just Minnesota?). We were on the hunt for METAL TENT STAKES! We were DONE dealing with the tent caving in!

Pamida had no tent stakes. The only big box in Camping Country, Minnesota and not tent stakes.

We went to the grocery store which was next door. No luck there either.

So, we started to head toward the lake and toward the light house that we wanted to explore. On the way we found a local hardware store.

THEY HAD METAL TENT STAKES! We purchased 2 packs and a hammer. $10 later we were happy, happy campers.

We continued down toward the lake and got side tracked by more trains at the Two Harbors Depot.

The last steam train that had ran in this area. IT WAS HUGE!!!!!!

IMG_9094Small.jpg

IMG_9101Small.jpg

We headed over to the Depot and visited the gift shop for a bit. While roaming around in there the Scenic Railroad pulled up. There is another route that goes from Duluth to Two Harbors and back.

IMG_9119Small.jpg

After the depot we headed to the lighthouse, but first explored the area right in front of it-which was just a small trail and some rocky areas that went out into the water a bit...it was VERY windy.

IMG_9130Small.jpg

IMG_9139Small.jpg

I love this pic.
IMG_9146Small.jpg

The lighthouse
IMG_9157Small.jpg

A view of the loading docks across the water-there was a big boat being loaded, but we couldn't really see anything happening.
IMG_9160Small.jpg

After the lighthouse we headed back to the tent. The plan was at 3:00 to meet up with thewesterberg and get some ice cream in Duluth! We got back to the tent and put in the metal tent stakes. Henry was veryyyy fussy and I knew he was exhausted-he hadn't napped at all yet that day. So we opted to give thewesterberg a call and see if we could postpone the meet until later that day, she graciously understood (being a Mommy herself!). I was also exhausted and getting another headache and needed a nap. The wind was still blowing, and we had the windows half down in the tent for air, so the flaps from the windows were catching in the wind-the noise scared Henry and he kept crying, which only made his exhaustion (and mine) worse. Joe took him outside and for a stroll while I napped at the tent. He reported back later that Henry fell asleep in less than 3 minutes once in the stroller and out of the scary tent!

After our naps we were HUNGRY. We hadn't ate since that morning, so we went into Duluth and ate at Grandma's. Grandma's is very well known in Minnesota, there is a Grandma's Marathon and we learned there are about 3 or 4 different Grandma resturants in Duluth alone. We ate at the main one for dinner.

Instead of normal high chairs, they had these space saver ones that worked great in their HUGE booths.
IMG_9197Small.jpg

Look at those cute little feet hanging out there...he had socks on, but kept pulling them off. Gotta pick your battles...;)
IMG_9200Small.jpg

DINNER! Mine was a roast beef sandwich with swiss cheese, peppers and onions, au jus to dip it in. Side of garlic mashed potatoes. Gee, can you tell we were NOT following WeightWatchers that weekend?!

IMG_9202Small.jpg

Henry had gotten a corn dog and applesauce, which he loooooved.
IMG_9203Small.jpg

Joe had gotten a burger along with a milk shake and a Coke.
IMG_9212Small.jpg

After they rolled us out of Grandma's we called thewesterberg to meet up! She was very near by, so we started heading her way, and of course on the way we had to walk past the lift bridge.

The lift bridge is pretty unique-the whole bridge goes up and down when big boats have to go under it. It doesn't open in the middle, but literally the whole thing goes UP. I had never, ever seen it before despite being in Duluth a few times and just as we were walking past they announced the bridge was about to lift, and HOLY COW, there was a HUUUUUUGE ship going through!

So, we watched this and ended up being a bit late - but we finally made it to the DIS meet! Thankfully they were understanding-being they live in Duluth, they have seen this site of a big ship going through probably a ga-jillion times, but being the tourists that we were, we had to watch.

The meet was AWESOME! It was soooo much fun meeting thewesterberg, her hubby Bubba Mouse and their little guy. The time just flew right by-we talked about everything from work, to travel, and of course about Disney!

We walked along the lake front and eventually sat on the beach while my DH and their little guy skipped/threw rocks in the water. They are such wonderful people, their little boy is just adorable. We had a fantastic time and hope we can meet up again sometime!!

IMG_9249Small.jpg

The wind had really died down by this time-the lake was very calm.
IMG_9250Small.jpg

IMG_9259Small.jpg

IMG_9261Small.jpg

After our time visiting, we said our good-byes and headed back to our car. Along the way, DH took a couple more pictures.

IMG_9299Small.jpg

IMG_9309Small.jpg

And we saw the lift bridge go up again! Twice in one night! This time for a much smaller boat.

IMG_9314Small.jpg

Back at the campsite I put a very, very tired Henry to bed-he went down very easily this time with the calmer wind and a non-caving tent, thank you metal tent stakes! Joe worked on the fire and had it going by the time I was finished up with Henry.

Onto hot dogs and smores!

No, we were NOT hungry, but we had brought hot dogs and smores stuff, and by golly, we were camping and we were skipping the diet for the weekend-STUFF IT IN! Nothing beats a hot dog and a smore over the fire...yummmm....

Joe making a perfect hot dog:
IMG_9326Small.jpg

Smore....yummmmmmmmm. 2 marshmallows, 3 pieces of chocolate, graham cracker. Funny thing is, I don't like any of these things all that much by themselves, but together-sign me up!
IMG_9332Small.jpg

We enjoyed the fire for a while, but it seemed to burn out much faster this night than the previous night. So, Joe and I got creative with our new camera. We have a Digital SLR, which means you can do open shutter, low-light shots.

We took a few of the stars:
IMG_9338Small.jpg

And then we were silly using the flash light we did some trick photography.

My 3-armed husband!

Me-Me-Me!
IMG_9345Small.jpg

Ya, we are dorks. But it was fun!

We eventually turned in and we all slept VERY well through the night.

Last day, coming up soon! We visit a historic murder site and eat more good food! And make the long trek home...

I am so hungry for a smore now!!! What a fun trip. I love camping except for the sleeping part too! I can never sleep. I learned to take a tylenol PM. then I get paranoid something will happen and I'll be drugged on a tylenol PM and wont wake up! :lmao: I cant win with sleeping and camping. Not sure anyone enjoys that part!

I love all of your pictures. They are great! The lift bridge is awesome. I would have looked too. We dont have anything like that here.

Brook - Your pictures are gorgeous! You're showing me a whole other side of living - I'm a city girl!;)

The bridge was very cool (and great nighttime shot, btw) and the smores looked yummy. We made smores this past weekend and we tried something new. Instead of a choc. bar, I used a Reese's peanut butter cup. Heaven!:cloud9:

Fun! I love the picture of the s'more.:thumbsup2

It was soooo tasty too. Too bad we have an electric stove in the house, otherwise I would make more at home!

Ya, sleeping while camping is sometimes no fun. Thankfully DH insists on an air mattress, so that helps a lot. And this time we woke up to cool mornings instead of that hot sticky air in the tent that wakes you up at the crack of dawn. Ugh.

The lift bridge is a really neat piece of architecture!

:rotfl2: I'm a city girl that likes to VISIT the country and small towns. I go bezerk living in one....such as now...itching to move to the City again! But, I love camping and enjoying small towns-it's beautiful and a nice getaway.

The Reese's sounds SO SO SO GOOD! Chocolate+peanut butter=awesome no matter what you do to it, so paired with marshmallow and grahma cracker...holy cow. Yes, I must try this next time.... Is it possible to make smores over an electric stove?!

Okay-I gotta get to work-hopefully I will have some slow times today where I can work on the last day of our camping TR, then back to Disney!

Looks like you guys had fun on your camping trip! The last time I went camping was 4th of July in the white hot Texas panhandle. UH! NEVER AGAIN!

Do you know anything about the gingerbread houses and edible Christmas decorations at the resorts? I'd love to maybe see one in progress during the week we are at WDW. Perhaps you or one of your readers could share any info you may have about them. I'm looking for Christmas card photo-ops!

Brooke, thanks for the mini-TR and great pics! It seems like just yesterday I read your AKL disneymoon trip report. The next thing--you were pregnant. I can't believe that Henry is almost one! He is so adorable!
